  1. I suppose if you only wanted to heat treat you might be able to get by, but I think I'd have to agree with everyone else, In the long run u'd be a lot better off with a descent O/A rig.
  2. Well I think that settles it. Thanks a ton Maddog, you've given me a bunch of good info-and everyone else who has given good info. I think I'll be happy with my Gas welder and a stick welder in AC/DC. What brands do you think would give me the best service, or rather what brands should I avoid?
  3. Hi again, I really appreciate all the helpful information you gentleman gave. I think I'm leaning towards a stick welder, not completely decided, but it seems like it has the features I'm looking for. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to put in the extra money to get the ac/dc, or if ac would be sufficient. Should anyone else have something they would like to add I would welcome it. Thank you very much.
  4. Hello everyone, I need a little help if I can get it. I'm a bladesmith and I need a welder to do a few odd jobs. The problem is, other than gas welding, I know so little about welding that I don't even know what I don't know or where to start. I'd like a good general purpose welder capable of preferably welding up to 3/8 inch. of mild steel and will weld high carbon steel. I have a forge body that I want to weld up and billets of layered steel to weld up and weld to a handle when making pattern welded steel. Just simple things like that, but I'd like to have something that can bigger jobs as well, in case I ever want to weld a pole barn some day. I plan on researching thoroughly what I end up getting, but I just don't have the time to research every type of welder and every welder within the type. If I could get pointed in the right direction, given some things to think about, etc., I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You very much, -Sade McCraw.
  5. Hello Littleport22, thanks for the welcome. You know, I haven't had any luck getting ahold of a good used anvil locally, I don't know if there are any flea markets around or not, we have a swap meet, but I don't know if a fellow would have any luck finding an anvil or not. I'd love to get an old anvil in good shap mysel, I'd really like to find a Vaughn sawyers anvil or something similar, or a bridge anvil would be great too. I'm going to be building a second seperate smithhy outside my shop this winter, with a traditional charcoal forge. I'll need to get an anvil for that. Currently I have two anvils that I use, one is a cutlers anvil that I got from Chuck Robinson, you can find a link to him off Don Fogg's site. The other anvil is a traditional London pattern anvil I purchased from Centaur forge. Good luck in your search, happy forging.
  6. Hi, I'd like to introduce myself. I've been enjoying reading the posts on IForgeIron for some time, and it's been great. I'm a bladesmith here in Southern Az. pretty much full time now for the last few years. I love forging iron and I'm always trying to learn more so I hope to share with everyone. I'm just now working on the business part of things so I don't quite have an internet site yet, but I will in the near future. I'm looking forward to talking to folks soon and posting. Thank You very much, Sade McCraw
