  1. Frosty--that's a homemade power hammer for when I really need to get the frustrations out!! Eric- I am a ways from Rockwood. I am almost in North Carolina (7 miles) and Virginia (22 miles). I am familiar with Charles Horner and he is an excellent instrument maker!!
  2. Here's a picture of it today-- that's my 90 year old Dad taking a few swats at the tubing.
  3. Just thrilled to have my new shop up and going, after years of too-small and not enough room! Built a 12 x 16 building, complete with porch to sit on and cool off. I have some nice equipment from a railroad shop that I have had for years but no place to use it-it is all in there now. Built a new 4 x 4 forge using the big firepot from the railroad, good big blower that really puts out, and a 250 pound anvil and 18 inch square swage block and stand. Just fired her up and made a cutting face for the anvil out of a chunk of 3/8 thick steel that had been heavy hydraulic tubing. That big forge got her hot so fast I almost melted it! Just thrilled and wanted to share on this great board! Ken
  4. When I was young I worked in the shop on steam locomotives. We would paint the non-jacketed hot surfaces with aluminum paint, then mix flake graphite in hydraulic oil to make paint. We would put it over the aluminum paint and when she was fired up the graphite baked on hard. It worked really well. Ken
  5. Hi Don- I'm in Hampton, near Elizabethton and Roan Mountain State Park- Ken
  6. What a great forum! My name is Ken Riddle, up in the East Tennessee mountains. I am new here and wanted to introduce myself. I have a pretty decent home machine shop, and have been a live steamer for many years. I have built a few steam locomotives in 1" and 1 1/2" scale and have a couple more in the shop I am piddling with. Several years ago I traded for a nice blacksmith shop from an old railroad shop and am just now getting a shed together to put it in. I have done some blacksmithing, but just mostly little jobs on a portable forge I have. Sure nice to find all this knowledge in one place! Thanks!! Ken
