  1. Thanks for all of the reply posts, I was surprised how many of you answered, It's a big help. Big thanks to iforgeiron for this awesome website. I'll try to take all your recommendations into consideration. Thanks again

  2. Hey guys, Could anyone help me figure out how to mount a post vice? I just finished cleaning up the vice I got for free. It's an old Indian Chief with 4 1/2'' jaws. The Threads of the screw are in excellent condition, don't think the previous owner used it much. I used a process called electrolysis which works awesome to remove rust, look it up on YouTube if you need to clean up some old metal. If you need pictures of the vice I can post those. Alright, Thanks.

  3. Steve,

I will attach a picture of the tang. This camera can't pick up the file marks that well because it is so bad so i will also attach a drawing i made that shows the rough pattern of the file marks. also, It came with a leather cover for the handle. that's all torn up though post-23181-0-98551000-1353027738_thumb.jpost-23181-0-62420400-1353027827_thumb.j

  4. Hey, This sword was given to me by my grandfather, supposedly it was taken on Iwo Jima. I don't know where it is originally from but when I removed the bamboo peg to see the tang, all a could see was file marks, no characters or anything. I'm pretty sure Its not one of those standard issue swords, but I'd still like to know the origin if at all possible. Thanks for any help.post-23181-0-29332300-1352991547_thumb.jpost-23181-0-47483300-1352991663_thumb.jpost-23181-0-44697100-1352991927_thumb.j

on a different note, does anyone know how to re-size pictures?

  5. I am deciding wither or not to make a gas forge or a coal/charcoal forge. I like the idea of a solid fuel forge, but I have no idea where to get coal, nor how much it costs. I also have no training working with a coal forge, only on gas. I kind of know how to make charcoal but I don't think my neighbors or my local fire department would appreciate me making the stuff on the weekends. I would like to know where you guys get your coal and how much it cost roughly if you can. I would also like to know how long that coal lasts. Propane is available where i live, but its pretty expensive so coal is my solution, but if i can't find any in the area i'll have to go with gas. Let me know you thoughts.

  6. Does anyone know what the difference is between a leg vice and a post vice? I'm pretty sure its just the name, maybe some people call them post vices, and some people call them leg vices. Anyways, if anyone has an answer it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

  7. Come on now, thats a little litty chunk of metal.... Not to say its not better than nothing but I would think you could find a better chunk of steel to put to use as an anvil.... If you cant find something better come see me and I'll give you a chunk that's at least 4-6" thick

Where do think i could find more scrape metal? it would awesome if you could give me a piece of metal like that.
  8. I have this big piece of metal lying around, its about 1 3/4 '' thick and about a foot and a half long and wide (square shape). I was wondering if this could somehow be fashioned into an anvil. could i cut it in half and weld it together? maybe i could set it in concrete? i just have no idea. let me know what you think. also, i have no idea what kind of steel it is nor how hard it is tempered. is it possible to temper it, or could i weld on some high strength stuff. let me know if you need pictures to get a better idea of what it looks like. almost forgot, it has about 6 holes in it, i have no idea why, this is just a scrape piece that i picked up. thanks in advance,

  9. the width of the vise is 5'', the screws look like replacement ones and in good condition, and the screwbox is rusty, but a wire brush might help with that.

  10. post-23181-0-08021200-1343323984_thumb.jpost-23181-0-19949100-1343324467_thumb.jpost-23181-0-39855000-1343324717_thumb.j

I was working for someone, we pulled this out of the garage and he didn't want it so he gave it to me for free. i was wondering if you guys knew anything about it as far as value and condition. this leg vise says "Indian Chief" on it, and we think it was made in the 1930's or something. regardless, i'll probably use it when i get some time to build my forge. it does have a bit of rust on it, but i think some steel wool could take care of that. anyways thanks,

*i wouldn't open the pictures, there too dang big for some reason
  11. so i have thought about it, and i think i am going to build the burner on this website:
    http://makingcustomknives.com/how-to-build-a-propane-forge-burner-video/
the thing is, he doesn't talk about what to do to hook it up to a propane tank. what i need is more of a shopping list. i don't know what kind of valves to get or how to connect the brass nipples to the propane hose, or where to get a hose for that matter. and should a get some kind of gauge? any help would be appreciated.

  12. That is excellent craftsmanship. I really like the style you made the knives in.On the third knife, what did you layer the handle with? is that wood or leather layers in the middle, and how did you get them so small is what i mean to say. anyways i really appreciate this kind of work. Just out of curiosity, what kind of forge did you use, how big is it. Oh, and the second to last knife, i think its some kind of maple, the puukko, how did you fit the handle without the end of the tang sticking out the butt of the knife? good work!

  13. i have been using someone else's forge for a while and have been looking into getting one of my own. just out of curiosity, what forge did you use? i really like what your doing here, this kind of stuff just get's me stoked to go out and blacksmith, thanks for the post
