  1. http://www.iforgeiro...y-forge-blower/

I have my catalog from 1920 and will look at your forge. Get back to you on the model number..........................That fire pot sets on top.

The blower is the Canedy Otto make and Royal is the model name. I will include an attatchment for your blower question, if I can locate that. They have their problems, but then most blowers do have a weak point.

There is a picture here of an old ad from Champion and a similar forge. I'll search through my ads and catalog and post up a model number for you.

    Thanks!!!!!
  2. Hey Bigred thank for putting the photo's on here, not sure why the didn't come up when I put them on the post I did it like I always do. hmmmm Backwards....... That would be an interesting drive LOL I know it is worth it the drive, but I have a friend who lives up that way and would like to incorporate a visit while I am up there.

I dont think the fire pot would mount to the bottom, notice how the side of the firepot matches the "cut out" on the side of the forge.

What do you mean by "creapage"???

  3. Hey yall,

I wasn't planning on buying a forge, seeing that I just built the forge of my dreams, but a deal came up that I couldn't give up.

A while back a friend of mine came over and watched me do some smithing, and he thought that he would like to do that, so he went out, bought a forge, blower, hammers tongs, and a anvil.

About a month after he bought all that, he came over for a lesson, so since he live about 2 hours away we worked about 10 hours in the shop, and the next day he was so sore he couldn't move, and decided that blacksmithing was TOOOO much work for him. Well the other day he called and asked if I wanted to buy all his blackmsmith tools, and for $265 I bought all of it.

The forge is a cast iron Champion with a clinker breaker, quench traugh, and metal "rack".

All I know about the Blower is that it is a Royal blower, Yall know any thing about those?????

The anvil is 100Lbs, and is (as far as I know) a Peter Wright, but on second thought it might be a Haybudden.

I have to go pick it up some time in the next 14 day's, with gas being what it is, I need to find more than one reason to drive an hour and a 3 hours there and back.

    Now for Photo's

So I have a question on the forge.... Lets make that questions LOL.
#1 any idea what model it is?
#2 Why is the firepot higher than the "floor" of the forge?
#3 What is forge like this worth?

    Thanks yall,

  4. trip, i would say your coal is a bituminous coal. i found some very much like what you have in an old coal bin at a friends in colorado. i had it analyzed by a friend that started the wyoming analytical laboratories. they do all the testing for the coal comming out of wyoming, china, colorado, they have analyzed coal from all over the U.S. and the world.

my coal has great btu and does coke up. the only problem i have with it is getting it broken up. when i find the lab work on the coal i found i will post it.

    Hey thanks,

Yeah this coal I got is HARD to break up, so i am putting it (The big chunks) in my side draft forge hood while I work, and let it "cook" in to coke. Seams to work ok, it makes it easier to break up, and is turned in to coke.

  5. Perhaps I missed this, but you did burn it and took note if it coked or not, right? I mean that is the give-a-way as to what type of coal you have.

I attended a class and it was mentioned as was here, that hard coal is very polished and soft coal is not. I know first had that won't work for me as most all coal has that polished appearance. The only which doesn't shine that I have seen is Ohio coal. It is grey and dull looking and not what you'd want for a forge as it is loaded with sulfur and trash (makes good clinkers) Looks much like shale.

Yes it does turn to coal, and "caves" up. Also after burning that coal in my forge for 8 hours yesterday, there was only 1 clinker, and it was the size of a half dollar piece, but there was a LOT of ash.

  6. You got a deal, and you got the goods.

Ask what the particulars are of the source of the coal next time.

    Phil

I asked him what type of coal it is, and he just said, "western Kentucky Lump Coal".????

Just a few minutes ago, an old man called me, and is giving me 1,000 pounds of Bituminous coal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That will give me 1,500 pounds!!!

Question, how long will 1,500 pounds of coal last me???
  7. Well I just got done trying it out, it is the WIERDEST coal I have EVER seen, I have NOOOOO idea what it is. It is really shiney, dark DARK black, not much dust, it will coke & will "cave" up.

All I do know is that I got 500LBs for $50, and it burns double barrel HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first metal I heated was a piece of 1/2" square, and it took NO time at all to get it to a forging heat!!!!!

SO far so good!!!!!!!! Praise the Lord!!!!!

  8. I have used both. I have also mixed the two with good results but much rather have bituminous. I had a friend stop by yesterday from West Virginia and brought me @ 100lbs of really nice bituminous. :D

The easter bunny has a beard and is in his late 50's. According to him coal is just laying around waiting to be picked up. KY is not far from WV. The land of milk and coal?

    Mark

Sounds like you have a good friend, to bring you coal. LOL yeah, on my Google status message I put "I wish Santa would bring me some coal" LOL

I think I have found a good source of coal!!!!! I put an add on Craigs List saying that I was looking for coal, and a few minutes ago a gentleman called and said that he sells lump coal for $0.10 a pound. Is that a good deal, or no???
  9. Hey, I really like the heart hook demo. Gonna have to try that one. I am not a video expert by any means but I think you could greatly enhance the video by considering your back ground and lighting better. When displaying the item for us to see it would show better if it were against a white background for example. With light shining on it from the camera side. There was one shot with the tongs holding a piece and the anvil was just behind. The piece sort disappeared as the anvil and workpiece were roughly the same color. IT was hard to see what you were trying to show us. Similar comment on the last shot. The room showed up dark and so the pieces on the floor were hard to see. They were also quite small. The heavy sunlight in the background outside causes your camera to adjust from a light standpoint to the background which was bright. That made what you were displaying dark. Once again I am not a video expert or even amateur photographer but but generally speaking you don't want bright light behind what you are filming. I suspect if you had filmed that last piece from the open doorway into a closed room it would have looked better. Anyway, my two cents. Nice video and thanks, I really liked how you turned turned the heart around.

Yeah, I like making those heart hooks, I am thinking of making a how to video on that subject.

I know what you mean about not being able to see the metal, I found the same problem when I first watched it but by then I just had to make it out of the film on hand. I think I am going to build a short steel table (about the same height as the top of my anvil) and paint the top white, and after I finish a technique I can lay the piece on it. Sorry about that though.

As for the lighting, well I am still in the process of setting up my new shop, and in some places the light is poor, wish we could have watched that last clip, but right after we finished filming it, the camera battery was about dead.
  10. I have worked with both soft and hard coals. It really depends on the quality of the coal. Anthracite of high quality will work well it is basically pure carbon. Buy a sack and try it out. If it works for you use it. I had some very good hard coal that as good as any Bituminous coal I ever used. It was some old stuff I found in a barn I was sad when I ran out. It burned super hot with a blue flame and almost no smoke .

I think I will try out a bag of it...... that is if that place is still open!!!! I have used actual blacksmith coal before, and I liked how it formed a "cave". Will Anthracite coal do that??

    Thanks
  11. How can I tell the difference between Bituminous and Anthracite coal, when I look at it?

I found a place just down the road that sells anthracite coal........ that is if they are still open, I tried to call them and i got a messaged that said their phone was disconnected, so I call the camber of commerce to see if that was true and THEIR phone was disconnected!!!!!! that's not a good sign

  12. so, I just got my new forge built, but now after just 3 day's of forging, I am out of coal!!!!!!!!! GRRR if it's not one thing its another!! LOL

I found a place that sells coal just down the road, but it is anthracite coal, and from what I read most blacksmiths like bituminous coal.

I have NO idea what type of coal I have been using. I got it from a friend, who gets it from an old school boiler room. All I know about it is, that when lit, it smokes like CRAZY but after a good flame is created there isn't as much smoke, and it takes a little while to form coke. Also it doesn't "cave" like regular blacksmith coal. Got any idea of what I have been using?

The closest place that sells bituminous coal is over a 2 and a half hours drive one way!!!!! and I can only afford a few bags right now, but later on I would like to buy a ton or 2.

  13. If you use a sink, I would recommend building the bottom up with fire brick, until the you have a new bottom of 4", and also, I would line the sides with firebrick. it will make it heavy, but it wont burn out ANY time soon. And if you decide t line it with firebrick, you will need to buy some fire clay and mix it in the mortar.

  14. This message is for all, but is directed to Thomas Powers.

It was brought to my attention by my good friend Fiery Furnace", that the way I made my statement on quote number 17 may have seemed disrespectful and that I should have kept the abbreviated language out of it.

I will admit that as a christian I should have kept the abbreviated language out, and for this I humbly ask for God's and your forgiveness.
Also I meant NO disrespect, and I pray that none was taken, on the way I made my statement, and you felt that I was being disrespectful then I humbly ask for your forgiveness again.

Thank you Fiery Furnace for bringing this to my attention, you are a good man, and God will bless you for it.
