Hey yall thanks for all the idea's.

After hearing yall say "NOOOO" to an over head design, I am thinking of doing a masonry side draft.

The reason behind building it out of brick is because I am building a masonry forge, here is a link so that you can see what it looks like at this time.

I plan on facing it with stone or brick, and I am going to put a 1/2" thick top on it, with a hole cut out of the center for the fire pot.

I didn't know that you posted pics of me and my shop on here!!!I wish I had known, I would have combed my hair, LOL

Hey y'all, thanks for the input, it has given me room for thought.

The reasone I am considering an over head hood rather than a side draft is because my forge is about 6' away from the nearest wall. Also I had a Uri Hoffi style side draft in my last shop and it would smoke up the shop to kingdom come!!! I was using a 12" flue pipe too.

Also I like the idea of the djustable height, but it seems like that unless you used chain and gears, the hood would stay "lop sided".

OHHHH and about the forge in progress. That's a WHOLE nother topic for when it is FINISHED!!! LOL

I have been setting up my new shop, and I even built a new masonry forge!!!!!

But with the lay out of my new shop I will have to use an over head forge hood, but since I have always used a side draft hood I have no idea on how to build one.
My forge is 4'X4.5', and I plan on using a 12" pipe.

So does the hood need to be the same size as the forge? How tall? How far from the top of the of the forge to the bottom of the hood?

A friend of mine ( who is also a blacksmith) has a kinyon style air hammer, and he s really pleased with it. So which one is better a tire hammer or an air hammer????

Just last week my family moved to our new farm, and thankfully it already has a shop built!!!

I have always had a steel (coal fired) forge, but this time I am wanting to have a masonry forge in the shop, and I now NOTHING about masonry forges except that I like the looks of them. hahaha I am wanting to make it out of regular concrete blocks and then face it with stone.

How should I build the side draft hood????
What size forge should I make for every day blacksmithing (not knife making)????
How big of a flu do I need???

Well I have never had any problems with my RIGID grinder, but I have friend who have broken theire RIGID tools and when they took them back to the store, they just gave them new one to replace it. No questions asked.

I am a little worried about getting the anvil post straight and square. Does any one have any tips on how to get it square???

I just sold some unwanted blacksmithing tools and now I have a good bit of cash that I would like to turn in to a Tire Hammer.
I have used one made by Clay Spencer at John C Campbell Folk School, and I LOVED it.

I need to know where/how to get plans to build a tire hammer, and any tips/tricks on making one.

RIGID is the best!!!!! They are a heavy duty tool, and the come with a LIFE TIME warrenty!!!!!! I have had one now for 4 years and it has never given me any trouble, and they stand by their warrenty!!!!
