Hey gus this is one i did by modifying a pair of shears that i picked up at a garrage sale.
I havent changed it heat treatmend as it felt realy dood with a file, i think it may have even been differentialy heat treated as the spine is some what softer then the edge.
Anyway hope you enjoy, feedback welcome.

the steel im using is 5160.
and staight from the heat treatment there is varyation in the steel, clean steel where the thickest clay was and ruff sort of scale on the edges.

Hi guys, i have just heat treated a blade usibg a coating of clay thikest at the spine and was wondering if grinding will affect the hamon lines?
any insight to this woulkd be greatly apperciated

have you got a petrol powered leaf blower ?
also i realy like the shape of that sword. only thing i would change would be to chop s little of the tip.

just need to make sure your bevels are very steep, other wise they will bend when they hit the target.

Has anyone ever herd of plunging a hot blade into a cake of soap before heat treat to remove scale ?
if no one has tried this i will give it a shot on my next one.

mmm. i dont like files. i had one quenced in oil then differentially tepmperd to a blue on the spine and bronze at the edge, after a couple of light chops on a logg of wood it snapped. a close inspection of the grain showed no real difference from edge to spine.
so now i just leave my file knives nomalised and they seem to hold up reasonably well.

sounds good, that way the eye will remain soft and unlikley to break, however it is still a nice peice

did you just quench the edge or the whole lot

have you thought of makinng a fuller only with two flat plates that can lie horozontaly whilst clamped in a vice. then you wolud start pice of steel the width of the 'T' and work the rest down.

just do it, experiance is the best teacher. Then when you get stuck on something you can ask a specific question and get a specific ansewer.
