  1. This site does not talk about casting an anvil. But it does have estimate in cost. Easy Anvil Making What about casting a smaller anvil? Maybe 50 lb. and Why cast iron?
  2. I used to work for an aluminum ladder company as a QA, now I won't buy just any ladder. I even inspect them when I walk by even though I'm not buying one.
  3. I think I want to build a solid fuel type, maybe something along the lines of the brake drum? set-up with table? for starters.
  4. Great these were the kind of answers I was looking for. I did search but couldn't get what I was looking for. Pain + Necessity = me buying a hammer or forging w/o handle(later). I know pain! I sometimes tend to be too frugal to point that its not practical and I have to check myself every now and then or get someone to check me. lol Doug
  5. Curly I was wondering cause I see lots of people talking about buying hammers? BTW I wouldn't go as far as calling a blacksmith yet. I am in the beginning stages of getting started. Found an anvil. Now gotta make my forge. Shouldn't be long though.
  6. I would like to add something as far as pricing. Most people don't really know what the price of things should be. From what I have learned from my limited marketing is : If you price something low people will think it is cheap or low quality. unless they are in the know. The inverse to this is People think If it's priced high it must be good or high quality. Also know where and to who you are selling. Never sell anything of low or sub-standard quality unless it is so stated.(I would prefer no sub-standard) Always get your time and costs from your material etc... Its easier to bring the price down than take it up!
  7. I don't know or remember if I posted this, but here goes. After my son worked about 3 hrs to get it out of the woods and he come home and legs and arms trembling, I told him I'd give him $20 for the work. "pete46 Posted Today, 10:00 AM Can I take your son hunting? " He said he tried getting to his shoulder to carry out. Like he wanted to a few years ago with hunting. Of course with the deer I told him NO!!! you'll get your A** shot carry that thing out of here. He is pretty stout and loves a challenge and hates to be beat by anything whether its cards, sports, push-ups or weight lifting.
  8. I was curious if homemade hammers are possible for blacksmithing. I also am curious as to why blacksmiths wouldn't use a solid metal hammer.(I haven't hammered yet), but.......I have used a solid casted hammer before. One of the foundries I work in they would pour hammers for us to use in knock-out. Would it be beneficial to use these and add rubber to handle for vibrations. Doug
  9. I love the fact that I have a piece of usable American History. That being said I don't think I will grind it. The paints that are on it I will wire brush it off. The top is mushroomed a bit, I won't worry about that much right now if at all. I guess what I am saying I don't want to remove any metal at all. And Like one poster mentioned using it will take care of most. I like the fact that we will be pounding on the same surfaces that someone else did nearly 100 yrs ago. Well since we found the anvil 5 in of snow has fell here in Alabama, so our world has come to a halt. As soon as we can I will be building a forge to start. My son and I want to bladesmith to start, and maybe some other things, like belt buckles. The young men in his school are into belt buckles(lol). I have some experience in metal but not much, I have worked in 3 foundries, One as a sawman, QA tech, and last one as melted, pourer and knock-out. I eventually want to pour metal.
  10. No someone painted it and my son just found it today in the woods? The paint looks like the xxxx we used in the NAVY ....red deck paint ...here is some pictures The places I have clean looks black underneath(patina)
  11. is the best way to get the paint off ...burn it
  12. No worries I have put nets up to catch them all.
  13. As of today I can add mine to the list. I think its 182lbs.(stamp on front) and the serial # is A12125, Could someone find the date of this anvil. Check out the story behind this anvil here. Doug
  14. I finally figured the serial # ...A12125
  15. I just uncovered the Mod# 182. I am kind of tickled. I just started metal detecting and have found nothing but scrap. BTW MY son dragged this about 300 yards out of the woods. He's a brute.
  16. Well I figured out what Anvil it is. I noticed the makers mark under the paint, well I started taking the paint off and couldn't figure out but a few of letters. But I have been searching for an anvil like for about 1.5 hours to match up what letters I do have and finally found it. Its a Hay-Budden Got to figure the year now.
  17. It's 25" long 10" wide Base is 9 3/4x8 7/8 1inch square 3/4 inch round another square under the horn I will get pictures as soon as I can
  18. Hello Everyone, I have been thinking about forging for awhile now, but wasn't sure where I was gonna get an anvil. Yesterday I was checking out prices online. I was shocked @ the prices. So I thought where can I get a piece of RR. Well today my 13y.o. son was playing in the woods behind our house and come across what seems to be a 125 anvil. I was shocked. It looks as if it has been painted over and I cant tell what brand it is. It has been used. Looks as if it has build up on the horn side of the anvil away from the holes end. Whoa whoa edit: As I was typing I thought about when I lifted it and saying it weighed 125lbs. Man I can lift 125lbs over my head. I cant lift this past my waist and I'm a big strong man(above average anyway) My son is an athlete and lifts weights he weighs 190 and he believe it weighs more than 125. Well anyway the sun has shined down on us on an overcast day. Doug
