I use a side draft hood. The hood is about 4' tall. The chimney is a piece of 10" pipe about 5' long. It works. I burn coke. I use wood to start fires(fat lighter). Lots of flame and smoke until wood is burned up. The flames and smoke turn 90 degrees at the top of forge and enter the hood. Nothing escapes that sucker(pun intended ;) ). Overhead hoods are less efficient due to the distance from the fire, they draw a lot of cooler ambient air which reduces the draw. A side drat sits at the top of the fire and is much less affected by the surrounding air.

The only thing I see wrong with that shop............it isn't in MY backyard. Very nice.

I have to move my anvil every time I use it. I went through a time when I was unable to move it. I bought a 20lb. sledge hammer head at a yard sale for $5. It served the purpose. Iron has been worked on very small anvils for a very long time. A forge can be as simple as a hole in the ground. Again, this has been done for a long time. Modern tools are nice, but when looking at history, a lot has been done with a lot less.

Swallow your pride. Move the anvil. Respect your wife's choices. You were one of them.

Like others have mentioned, I would read a thread just because he had commented on it. He will surely be missed here. I think the display of saddness and grief shown here by so many like myself, who only knew the gentleman on a computer screen, speaks volumns of the man. May he never be forgotten. The anvil will ring in NE Ga., in his honor.

I've always wanted a Peddinghaus anvil. I'm considering the 77 lb. model. I have to move my anvil every time I use it. I have a lot of back problems that cannot be repaired. So, I am considering a smaller anvil than I have now. I rarely work stock larger than 3/8". The old back just ain't what it used to be. Have any of you folks ever used an anvil this small? If so, what did you think?

Kohlswa, is what I have. It is a very hard anvil. I keep a chain wrapped around the waist, for a muffler. Without the chain it rings like a bell.

My anvil is a 100 lbs. It serves me well. Do I need a 1000 lb. anvil. No. Would I have one if I could afford it. Probably so. Why? I'm a man. ;)

Nice looking group. I like the wrap and weld hawks. My forge welds being a bit unreliable, all mine are slit and drift. Thanks for the pics.
