  1. single edge, but I'm working on a piece of rail iron for an anvil. I used a piece of leaf spring for blade material. I don't really know how to forge a tip onto the blade, I don't want to have to cut away any material in order to put a tip on it, partly due to the fact that I don't have the hardware required to do it (aside from cutting it on the edge of the anvil, kind of a pain sometimes).
  2. Okay, I am completely new to this and am in the process of making my very first blade, ever. I have a rough shape of the blade and have the right thickness that I want and everything, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to put a point at the tip. It looks more like a golf club than the end of a knife. Can somebody please help?
  3. Hey, are there any smiths here in Louisiana? I'm in the Fort Polk area, so if you're nearby, maybe 50 miles give or take, let me know. I would like to learn a few things in person and actually see what's going on, I've been having to play guess and check for the past few months since I started, haha. Thanks.
  4. Hey guys, thanks for the input. For the time being I will have to work on the ground, unless I happen upon a stump or something like that. I can't stand my rail iron on end, not tall enough and the other side is all jacked up, really worn out. Think I could probably grind a new surface onto it? If you say it can be done while sitting on the ground with enough practice, then I believe you and will work in this fashion until I can get up on my feet. I work on my porch on the second story so I don't think digging a pit would quite work, though a good suggestion, hadn't though of that.
  5. I am working with a forge that I made out of a bucket, however, the entire shop sits on the floor, so I am having to kneel over the forge, the anvil (a piece of old rail iron that I flipped upside down), the whole works. I have only been doing this (blacksmithing, not just the shop setup..) for about 2 months now, but I have recdently noticed that my work gets really marred up when I am working it. I think it may have something to do with the fact that I am having to kneel over the work. Am I right in assuming this? Also, I am kind of a small framed guy, so could it just be that I can't control the hammer very well? Any tips or advice?
  6. hey, i'm a new member and a new smith, and i'm trying to get an effective forge going. i saw one of your posts from an '05 thread so i thought id ask you. right now, all i have is a pale insulated with some fireplace mortar with a black iron pipe running through the bottom of it with some holes drilled for air. it gets the job done, for the most part, but i can't forge weld in it. if i go about using a firepot, do i have to fill the firepot to the surface with coal, or do i shove the work into the pot to heat, im really not understanding how to work with a firepot, ive only ever worked with coal at the surface level of the forge, not sunken down into it. please help.
