Spike Cross

MRobb

A spike cross I just finished for one of my son's friends. He found some spikes and saved them for me. I wanted to make something for him as a thank you. He asked for a cross.

I have a bunch of spikes and I hadn't thought about making a cross using the head as the base. Thanks for posting. I'll try that this afternoon. Should be interesting.

CurleyGeorge, thanks for looking!

nwaite, Yes it's just a chisel & hammer. Random verticle lines.

Marksnagel, make sure you post pics too. Flatten the bottom a bit to make it sit up straight.

I started on one yesterday. The first thing I did was heat the head and drop the spike in the hardy hold. Then I flattened the head. That worked well. Sits nice and stable. Then I cut the bottom cut halfway through and bent the spike backwards 90 degrees to facilitate the upwards cut. All cuts were made with a hacksaw. After all cuts were made and the arms and head were spread I bent the origonal bend at the bottom back straight.
Then as usual, I got distracted and promptly burnt one of the arms. Not too horrible but none the less burnt. The first one will be the "Old Rugged Cross".
Thanks so much for giving me the inspiration to make a spike cross. Hopefully mine will turn out half as nice as yours. (If I quit burning them)

Good idea on flattening the head first. I didn,t think of that part until the end. It's easy to get distracted.
Good luck and show some pics of your work. I'd like to see how they turn out.
