November 8, 200817 yr Today I drove out to Amish-ville to buy coal (from Maysville Elevator), and got 150lbs for $12.00! Then I went home and got to work. My coal coked very well, but was just a little bit more smokey than I thought. I also made my first forge weld! (I hadn't done very well welding with charcoal:mad:...) The pictures are of one peice of coal (bad quality picture) and my 1st ever forge weld (a link)-both sides. I actually got the fire so hot it destroyed almost an inch of my link...
November 8, 200817 yr 150 lbs for 12 bucks? Oh, how I wish - nice buy!. Congrats on your first weld! Just keep at it - it gets easier as you start learning to tune the conditions for repeatable results.
November 8, 200817 yr Congratulations on the weld and the buy on coal. One key element of forge welding with coal is perfecting controlling the coal fire. Coke the coal as it moves in from the sides. Don't dump green coal on top of the fire. Use water to control the coking of the coal as it moves from the sides of the forge inwards towards the center.
