August 17, 2025Aug 17 Darwin Award runner up recipient here. Back in 1987 when I was waiting to start flight school, a buddy and I were cutting out rusty sheet metal on the floor board of my '70-something International Harvester Scout II truck. We were using an oxy-ace torch and brass rods. On this one piece in the cargo area in the back, the sheet metal kept popping up as it cooled. We got frustrated. I got it glowing yellow and was pouring on the brass when we heard this loud hiss! We looked at each other with giant, scared eyes, jumped out of the truck and took off running. Ol' Andy, a 250 lb farm hand, left me in the dust, and I was sprinting. Turned out we welded a hole in the plastic gas tank filler tube. Wow! I wish I had kept that truck. You wouldn't believe what they go for these days.
