Clearence on a ribbon burner forge

There is no one size fits all answer here.  The short version is you really want complete combustion to occur before the flames reach the work piece.  However, the number and diameter of holes in the burner face will have a big impact on the distance required for complete combustion, as will the pressure of the fuel and air mixture in the burner.

Four to six inches should be more than sufficient for most ribbon burners, but yours could be different.
