Blue Mule Forge
Bought this vise for $100, hoping to find some help with an ID. Learning the tools history can be just as exciting as using it.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Looks like a J. Hyde, New London Vise Works to me (Joseph Hyde & sons). Looks like it is in good shape and a bargain at $100 U.S. for a 5 1/2 in vise, as long as the screw & screw box is good. This from the Garage Journal. Quote In the 1905 New London City Directory, the following information can be found: - Robert Chamberlain is listed as an Engineer at Joseph Hyde & Sons; - Joseph Jr., Samuel and Joshua Hyde are listed as Proprietors of "N. L. Vise Works"; - New London Vise Works (J. Hyde & Sons) are listed as manufacturers of: - Jack Screws - Machinists & Machinery - Vises
Blue Mule Forge
Thank you! The screw and box are in excellent working condition! Had some surface rust when I picked it up but I cleaned it up and oiled it. Thank you again!
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
You're welcome, somewhere in the back of my mind, I had seen that post in the garage journal. Nice to know I'm not totally senile. prior to that I had never heard of J. Hyde & sons a rather obscure manufacturer I think.
