Luke123456
Good evening I came across a very rusted cleaver I found in my father in laws shed. After some restoration work the stamp is Thomas smith and sons solid cast steel. Please would anyone have any info or date this could have been made? thank you in advance Luke
ThomasPowers
WHAT COUNTRY ARE YOU IN? Anyway cast steel was a material that was commonly used for better cutting implements in the 19th century. Note the piece was not cast from steel; rather carburized wrought iron was melted in a crucible and cast into an ingot that was then forged into items. Huntsman pioneered the process in England in the mid 1700's and it started to dwindle in use with the advent of the Bessemer Kelly process in the mid 1800's; but was still used in lesser amounts until around the Great Depression in the 1930's.
