Help getting an anvil ID?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm very new to blacksmithing (I've yet to finish my first project - tongs). I bought this anvil from an antiques shop in the north west of the UK. There's not a whole lot of information I was given, other than that it was bought from a blacksmith who was using it for 30 years. It has no visible markings from what I can see, it's around 140kg / 308 lbs and has a good rebound of around 87%. Any help identifying it would be very much apreciated, thank you very much for your time!

Welcome NWIO: if you will edit your profile to show your location you may be surprised how many of the gang are close to you and a lot of answers are location dependent and we won't remember you are in the UK.

Interesting anvil you have there and it looks usable. I can't help with a maker but will caution you against doing any grinding on the face of it which would ruin it.

It appears to be an English made double horn. I rarely see them. Can't really identify English anvils with no markings, as there were many English brands. Nice anvil, regardless. Enjoy it!

Thank you both kindly for your help :). I've edited my profile & I don't ever plan on doing any grinding. I've done a few tidbits of work on it & the pitting is really quite useful for flattening work so it doesn't seem to be an issue for me. I'm really enjoying getting into this craft, thanks again for all your help!
