MAP AND MORE INFORMATION: Octoberfest 2017 DEMONSTRATORS: Principal Demonstrator: Warren Holzman, Iron Studio Ltd, Philadelphia DESCRIPTION: LEAD DEMONSTRATOR - Warren Holzman IRON STUDIO LTD, PHILADELPHIA Warren will be demonstrating a large repousse in steel. Like small scale traditional repousse the format is analogous to a bas relief sculpture in sheet material, rendering images in a foreshortened three dimensionality. Utilizing 10 ga material without the aid of pitch or lead to raise, chasing and repousse will be done with simple tools like a stump, sinking cup and hand hammers and punches. Heat becomes the essential piece of equipment to isolate, stretch and refine specific areas. I plan to cover all aspects from layout to tool development and finishing options. A Philadelphia based artist working in forged and fabricated metals, Warren is the owner of Iron Studio LTD, a growing professional practice executing craftwork in iron for residential and commercial markets around the globe. He has received numerous public art commissions and his work is included in private collections in Philadelphia and nationally. Holzman is the blacksmith professor and forging program coordinator for Bryn Athyn College in Pennsylvania, and has taught at Peters Valley School of Crafts, Penland School of Crafts, New England School of Metalwork, University of the Arts, and Moore College of Art and Design. He has been the visiting artist and lecturer at Kent State University and SUNY New Paltz.IN THE EDUCATION AREA - LOGAN HIRSHWEED, CAAt Oktoberfest I plan on exploring traditional joinery techniques in a strong English style with an application of personal flair. While I think its important for smiths to be familiar with traditional practices I think it is also important to keep a personal style active in every creation. This helps develop a Smith to a having a style versus a Smith being known for a process. This in turn keeps the Smith and the blacksmithing community contemporary, a secure foundation for every educational experience. Get ready for a weekend of hard work.
