January 6, 201610 yr 100 years ago Barre VT was the center of the granite tombstone & monument business in the US, and there were many quarries, and a few big tool makers. Ahern had the reputation of a genius with making and heat treating tools for the industry, and ended up working with one of the big makers. They even used his name in their marketing. Your hammer would have been used to drive roughing chisels, or star drills to make the holes for feather & wedge splitting.
