SReynolds
I will forge several nail headers from medium or or higher carbon. However, I want to MIG WELD the header to a low-carbon steel handle. How much carbon content must there be to concern myself with preheating the carbon prior to welding to low carbon (1018) steel?? or perhaps just pre-heat it anyway to be safe? When it JUST begins to turn a dark red would probably be hot enough?
T.J.watts
Check out the welding specs for the steel you are using before you weld it. Or just weld one as a test and see what happens.
