TCook
I am looking to get into Blacksmithing as a hobby. I wanted to build a forge like what you would find in medeval times. Is this a good idea or should I just make one Out of a barrel or something.
Nobody Special
Well, medieval is a complex subject, depending on when and where you mean. Post Roman Frankish? Say 600s or so? Early Rennaisance Italy? Lot of variation. It's probably a lot easier to learn using semi-"modern" methods, then modify your forging tools to suit you as you learn more. Moving metal is moving metal.....but, far easier to play with post-vises, angle grinders, and electric blowers rather than wedging stuff in place, filing by hand (although you'll still do plenty of that), and using sack bellows. Blacksmithing traditionally was labor intensive and usually done with multiple people, rather than a single man shop. One of the easier forges for a beginner is the 55 forge. Search in the forums or in google, either way it'll lead ya back here. Read, read, read, and find a blacksmithing group near you.
