July 30, 200718 yr so i just about have my first coal forge done, small table, only 20" by 30", and im sorta wundering what kinda hood/chimny i sould use. ive been to campbell a hand full of times so have used the side drafts, i know they work well. but i have a little fuss with how close it needs to be to the fire and have that makes a wall right next to the forge so limits space a little. i want to go with a hood but not realy sure just how i want to make it, just thought i would ask everyone how theres is done, any good ideas that worked well, or any "good ideas" that failed miserably. would love to see pictures
July 30, 200718 yr if you don't like breathing or looking thru smoke, go with the side draft. It can be as simple as a pipe with part of the outside opened up.BP0460 Anatomy of a Forge Flue
August 1, 200718 yr I was on the scrounge at a lot one day and found some discarded air ducts. Works for me. Attached with bolts so I can remove it for larger stock. The cut edges are turned over to remove the sharp edge. Christopher
August 1, 200718 yr I also just finished making a forge. I wanted to use it outside and was scared stiff that i was going to start a fire, no rain here for ages. So i made it a small hat. Smoke isnt a problem but it seem to have sorted out the spark problems. I used what scrap bits i had lying around the shop hence the size. Took exactly 2 sq/meters of sheet and a bit of 15mm box. I can't get coke so I need to get a layer of fire bricks on it to make the pot deeper. But im well chuffed. Tomorrow im going to be hammering away if i can find enough charcoal that is ;!http://www.avanturist.si/forge/forge2.jpghttp://www.avanturist.si/forge/onfire.jpg
August 1, 200718 yr Just finished my side draft after putting up with smoke and sparks for 3 years.Works better than I imagined.I used scrap steel I had around the shed and a flue a friend had. Smoke box is 17"deep x 22"wide x 53"high.Chimney is 9" dia. recommended 10" but I used what I had and made it as high possible. The top of the flue ended up 53" above the roof line and draws really well. Now back to forging without the fumes and fleas.:D
