  1. you could try Vaughans. Baker Horseshoes, Benjamin Tools, Vaughans, Sterling Farriers tools they have an outlet in the US. I am also looking at buying a new anvil and that looks like the best option for me. I am in europe though.

    Which way to turn?

cw is usefull if you use a tap or a die in conjunction with the tailstock to apply pressure, use a centre for a tap, faced off MT sleeve for a die, tap wrench or die holder resting on the bed like a dog, reverse to get said tap or die off for 2nd and 3rd cuts. Not one for small threads though. Also you dont get nice clean sharp threads come to think of it. But it has its purpose. if you try it beware of the wrench flipping around and getting you under the chin when you put it in reverse.
  3. heres one where you can down load a lot of different media books films ect. http://www.archive.org and search for anvil , forge etc. All the material is for one reason or another public domain so legal to down load. all the books are pretty old 1900's and pre. but here is what i found so far Forge work ([c1912]) Blacksmith shop practice .. (c1910) Practical blacksmithing. A collection of articles contributed at different times by skilled workmen to the columns of "The Blacksmith and wheelwright" .. (1888-91) Forge work ([c1912]) Forge-practice (elementary) (1904) and a few more You can also get buster keatons 'the blacksmith' there too happy reading
  4. I also just finished making a forge. I wanted to use it outside and was scared stiff that i was going to start a fire, no rain here for ages. So i made it a small hat. Smoke isnt a problem but it seem to have sorted out the spark problems. I used what scrap bits i had lying around the shop hence the size. Took exactly 2 sq/meters of sheet and a bit of 15mm box. I can't get coke so I need to get a layer of fire bricks on it to make the pot deeper. But im well chuffed. Tomorrow im going to be hammering away if i can find enough charcoal that is ;! http://www.avanturist.si/forge/forge2.jpg http://www.avanturist.si/forge/onfire.jpg
  5. hi, I like many others it seems am also building my own forge. I also have a question about firepots. I like many others made my forge from scraps of plate i had lying around my delovnica. My problem is getting hold of a firepot. I am in Slovenia and getting anything here is a problem. I thought about using a brake drum like so may others but it is going into a company workshop and i need something solid and not 'its an old brake drum' comment from a work inspector. I ended up using 5/16 and 1/4 plate to make the fire box. There is also a 1" layer of fire bricks to cover the entire top making the firepot 3" deep. I know this is not good set up as the mild steel will rot but how long can i expect a firepot like this to last? What affect is there to the welds? Here are some pics its not totally welded up up yet but i'll finish it on monday. http://www.avanturist.si/forge/forge1.jpg http://www.avanturist.si/forge/firepot1.jpg http://www.avanturist.si/forge/firepot_under.jpg
