HathegKla Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 I'm trying to taper the ends of 6-12" lengths of 7/16" hex rod. I need to be able to rotate it quickly while maintaing a decent grip. I also need to be able to grab one of the tapered ends (maybe 1/4 inch hex). What kind of tongs would be best for this? I'm also looking for tongs for tapering short lengths of 1/4", 5/16" and 7/16" square bars. Quote
monstermetal Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 I think I would try just making a regular set of pos style tongs and set the jaws at 120 deg instead of 90 Then twist the jaws 60 deg to one side so the flats are in line with the reins ... Or just leave it with the point at top center.. either way when you turn it 90deg you'll have a point or flat Quote
HathegKla Posted August 14, 2012 Author Posted August 14, 2012 lol, sorry what are pos style tongs? My forging expierence is pretty limited. it seems like anything meant for holding round stock would work. Quote
Rich Hale Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Weld a short handle on end of each and cut off later Quote
pkrankow Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 POZ tongs. Universal tongs might be a ticket. They are an altered set of "pipe" tongs. Phil Quote
