August 13, 201213 yr I'm trying to taper the ends of 6-12" lengths of 7/16" hex rod. I need to be able to rotate it quickly while maintaing a decent grip. I also need to be able to grab one of the tapered ends (maybe 1/4 inch hex). What kind of tongs would be best for this? I'm also looking for tongs for tapering short lengths of 1/4", 5/16" and 7/16" square bars.
August 13, 201213 yr I think I would try just making a regular set of pos style tongs and set the jaws at 120 deg instead of 90 Then twist the jaws 60 deg to one side so the flats are in line with the reins ... Or just leave it with the point at top center.. either way when you turn it 90deg you'll have a point or flat
August 14, 201213 yr Author lol, sorry what are pos style tongs? My forging expierence is pretty limited. it seems like anything meant for holding round stock would work.
August 14, 201213 yr POZ tongs. Universal tongs might be a ticket. They are an altered set of "pipe" tongs. Phil
