I Forge Iron

New from Maryland

Recommended Posts

I'm brand new from Baltimore, Maryland. And when I say brand new, I mean heating up metal with an oxyacetylene torch in a vise, and turning it from a well thought out, engineered piece of metal, to an unrecognizable piece of mutilated "Imnotsurewhatthehellitis". I've always been interested in blacksmithing, but have never had the space for equipment. I'd like to learn as much as I can from everyone here, either online or in person.

There are a lot of blacksmith resources in Maryland. THe Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland meets at the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster, WNW of Baltimore. We have a section in the Blacksmith Groups Forum here on I FORGE IRON. We also have a FaceBook Page: "The Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland". We give classes. Our most popular class is the Blacksmithing 101, covering all aspects of getting started in blacksmithing. There will probably 2-3 more weekend sessions this year and a Wednesday night session in October. Our webpage is www.bgcmonline.org

The Chesapeak Forge Guild meets at the Kinder Farm Park in Millersville. Their home page is http://www.chesapeakeforge.org/

There is a new Guild forming on the western edge of Frederick County: The Blacksmith Guild of Western Maryland. they have a facebook page of the same name.

Welcome to blacksmithing in MD.

Howdy,
I'm very new to the blacksmithing scene as well but it appears we're neighbors as I live in Mount Airy on the I-70 corridor about half way between B-more and Fredneck.

I'm lacking in tools currently but I'm looking at finding and purchasing an anvil as soon as funds allow and I'm working on researching and collecting materials for building a hobby sized propane forge. I currently do some non-blacksmithing metal work (see my intro thread for pics).

I'm signed up to take the Blacksmithing class taught at the Carroll County Farm Museum in October. It is less than $200 and it meets all 5 Wednesday nights in October. I can find a link if you need one or there is a link from the Central MD Blacksmiths website.

Glad to know I'm not the only new guy in the area. Good luck with your smithing progress and I hope we will see each other around.
