July 23, 201213 yr Wondering if anyone who has purchased an anvil from old world anvils can speak a little on the softness hardness of them? The cast steel ones, not the forged kanca one.
July 24, 201213 yr Sam, I don't have an Old World, but I do have a EuroAnvil at home and work with a couple of Jymn Hoffman's cast anvils on a regular basis. Compared to the glass-hard face of an old Peter Wright, the faces are definitely softer, but as long as you only hit hot steel on them, you are fine. It's those errant blows and momentary lapses of reason when we hit a cold piece that will show the difference. Don
July 24, 201213 yr I've been working with a two horn classic ( cast in Caechoslovakia) almost daily for about 10 yrs. and its still looking good. The only dings on it are from the hammer, not cold mild steel. I Often cut 1/2" round at black heat on the edge.Couldn't say if this is representative of them still.Either somethings wrong with my eyes or I've gone green.
July 25, 201213 yr I worked on one of the 66lb Church window anvils years ago It had very good rebound
August 2, 201213 yr I have a 167# Old World Anvil in the German Pattern. Used it for about 10 years with no problems, good rebound, no serious marks to the face. My only complaint is that I paid about $350 for mine and they are a LOT more than that now.
