Hunter Douglas Martin Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Well I'm at it again! My grandfather was recently placed in an assisted living home because he no longer knows who he is. My dad and I have been slowly looking through the stuff in grandpa's garage and grabbing things we could use at the house. (With grandmother's permission of course) Well I came across a neat old butcher knife likely from the 50's or so. My grandpa used to love Bowie knives and owned several. So I decided to do sort of a stock removal Bowie using the old chopper. Here are a few pics of the work so far, sorry for not getting a before picture! Sort of forgot about it. Anyway this is more of a sentimental thing to me than anything else, I just thought he'd appreciate a nice Bowie being made out of a nice old piece like this. Quote
Hunter Douglas Martin Posted January 17, 2012 Author Posted January 17, 2012 Update: I've finished the blade, differential hardened. Going to temper tonight. Here are some updated pictures. Any advice would be great! Quote
Hunter Douglas Martin Posted January 19, 2012 Author Posted January 19, 2012 Another update: Getting the handle on. Pics: Quote
Hunter Douglas Martin Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 Almost done with the Bowie! Handle is almost done, still need to finish sanding and stain. Then I'm going to go for a mirror finish on the blade. Work on a sheath. And call it a day Quote
Hunter Douglas Martin Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 Andddd another update! Stained the handle. Mahogany wood, with a gunstock stain. Quote
Grundsau Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Just came across this thread. I like it and that is a nice thing you're doing for your grandpa. Quote
pete46 Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 Did you glue the handle on if so what did you use? What is that blue paper? Thank you &NICE work! Quote
Hunter Douglas Martin Posted January 21, 2012 Author Posted January 21, 2012 @Grundsau: Thank you @pete46: Yes, the handle was glued with gorilla epoxy, The blue paper is just painters tape, used to prevent the excess epoxy from marring up the blade. And Thank you! :D Quote
Hunter Douglas Martin Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 Nearly done! Finished the wood with a nice polyurethane finish sanded the blade till I was happy with it. Gave it an edge. All that's left is to sharpen and make a sheath! Quote
