J W Bennett
I am putting the 2x8 Deck down on my new 18' trailer. The crossmembers are 2"x2"x1/4"wall tubing. Does anyone know of a good self-tapping screw that will do the job or should I go with 1/4'x4" bolts and drill clear thru the tubing? Any advice is appreciated. HWooldridge
They make a trailer screw designed exactly for that job. They are 1/4" fine thread with a self-tapping tip and a large, Torx-type, countersunk head (can't recall what size bit). You drill a 3/16 pilot hole thru both 2x4 and frame then drive the screw in - I use a low rpm Milwaukee Hole Hawg. Go to a trailer manufacturer and tell them what you are doing. These screws won't get loose with time like bolts will and are easy to break off if you ever have to replace the wood (although it's best to use pressure treated). Dr Dean
Check with a local semi trailer repair shop. You can get a real slick self tapping torx head countersunk bolt. I used them all the time when I was in trailer repair. I did find out that the bits lasted alot longer when I used my 1/2 air impact tham my 3/8. J W Bennett
Thanks for the replies. The site was down so I went to the local fastenal and they hooked me up with the screws you guys wrote about. Treated decking is done. I have a few more tie downs to weld on and I will have it the way I want it for now. Once again thanks for the info. John
mcraigl
JWB, Would love to see pix of your trailer. Did you design/build it yourself? I've been contemplating building one because the ones at the trailer dealer seem kind of cheesy for the price you pay.
J W Bennett
mcraigl, Below is the link to the original thread asking for advise and suggestions and the start of the build. I will take some more pictures now that it is close to being done and post them.
