Hill anvil

Featured Replies

I picked up my second anvil today and I really don't know much about it. It's a Hill 155 lb. It is very good shape with some small cuts in the face and one chip one one edge. I haven't been able to find much on the web so far but it appears it's English and could be made some where around 1830-1870. I have a small Peter Wright 83 lb. and it's great I just wanted something larger to work on heavier stock.

If anyone has more information, I would appreciate your input.

Thanks

Per "Anvils In America" your anvil is English, 'made between 1830 and 1850 or a little later.' Made in Burmingham. It will have these features; "3 handling holes, a hardie, a pritchel, a table and are rounded under the horn." Info from AIA pages 68 and 73.
From the picture on page 74 of a 177# Hill, they appear very much like a Mousehole to me. Nice anvil!

Thomas, Ya get the quick draw award on this one. Picked up the book read went to post and dang there you were.
Ken.

Some pictures of my Hill anvil. I worked on it and cleaned up many of the marks on the face I wish I would have taken a before picture.

Some pictures, I hope this works OK. I tried some earlier and they were way too big. I cleaned up my anvil and took out most of the chisel marks. I wish I would have taken a before picture.post-14158-078331800 1282864184_thumb.jp
