Chris Waldon
Is the steel we commonly refer to here as 1095 actually HR 1095 or CRA 1095?
Charlotte
HR 1095 is Hot Rolled. a mill finish more normalized than annealed slightly lower precision on the specifiction. Generally with scale still adhearing. CRA 1095 is Cold Rolled Annealed rolled to size and annealed. Ready to drill, cut, grind and finish before heat treating. If you are going to forge then HR 1095 is what you want because the benefit of annealing will be lost as soon as you put it in the fire. The slightly more expensive CRA 1095 is normally chosen for knives made by stock removal methods. Yes 1095 is either one or the other.
