junker
So I'm not ready for swords... I'll admit that. But I was wondering... would it be possible to make a hickory handle to a sword that was wraped in wire so that it left gaps and then have leather showing in the gaps... (the wire wrapped like a spiral) would this even be possible, and if so, how on earth would you do it?
Charlotte
Yes it would be possible and actually has been done. There are a couple of ways to do the wrap. Carve the handle. cover with leather and tool the leather into the grooves then wrap the wire. Incidentially I would use nickle silver rather than stainless as it works better. I've seen civil war era swords with this type of fanciy grip. Wraping and tooling the leather is a little tricky to make a good job.
