Ed Tipton
OK, so my ignorance is showing again. I've carried my "pocket knife" for years, but until this forum, I've never heard of a friction folder. From what does this term eminate, and how is this different from my "pocket knife"?
Don A
This is typically a folder without a back spring. The blade is pinned tight enough to have a bit of friction, so it doesn't fall open on its own. Usually, they will have an extended tail on the tang to stabilize the blade when open. Here is a good "how-to" book for rustic friction folders:Antler and Iron II A Google image search for "friction folder" will turn up a lot of nice examples. Robert Mayo
And what is the distinguishing feature of a slip-joint folder? The spring in the back of it and lack of a locking mechanism. Bob
