Waiting on 400lbs of concrete
sand is lighter, with concrete i cam tip it up and roll it to move it. Ive been using one i made in 1992 that way in several shops. it was a 4 inch otherwise the same. there is a picture of it somewhere in a post about vise stands.

One youtuber was honest and said as i remember that his videos are cut off real forging, like in real time he wont forge that tool that fast but he used to cut that boring part of hammering or grinding, so my question in all framework what is done on internet how much off that stuff is real, motivational for some folks, and how much of that stuff that we see on internet is fantasy for someone, not worth trying or doing.
Behind every fail there is some kind level of frustration. Right? When its not worth trying something you see on internet?
You can learn more from a fail than an easy success. Ive known some really good smiths over the last 40 plus years seen them all crash a project - and come out better.

It is a hand filing vise. I bought it new old stock 30 plus years ago in an old hardware store turned flea market in Gilbert LA, I remember because Ialso bought a new bench shear (still had the dried cosmoline) both for 50 bucks.

Very nice. Is it welded together?
Yes welded across back to the 2 inch angle then a spot between each vertical tube in the back. even from the ends the appear to be floating.

What do you mean by a clean fire? Is that saying without contaminants, or a reducing flame?
minimal contaminants and as low oxygen as possible direct blast on the weld spot.

Good Morning,
When trying to learn 'Fire Welding', you have to ask yourself "How hard should I hit these 2 bowls of Jello?". Put your Forging Hammer down and pick up a hammer half it's size or less. Don't splatter the Jello!! You are trying to persuade these molecules to bond with those molecules, Politely!! Please and Thank You!!
It is easier to start with thicker material. 3/16" thick material looses it's heat quite quickly.
I was blessed to learn forge welding from Bob Patrick many years ago. I remember he said "the iron wants to weld". Turns out he was right, if you let it happen, it will. Not magic, clean, heat, tap. If you have a large surface area then some flux helps, but I think people generally drown the work in it. I try not to let the iron hit the anvil yil Im ready to hit it. Another hint, if you want to weld with coal you must learn to run a clean fire; that is tje most important I think. Oh, and practice, practice, and practice some more.

Also why do you keep quoting your post from 2 days ago without any new information? I saw one quote that has been removed.
Sorry, I was having trouble uploading pictures from my cheap phone. I don't post much, mostly work.
