  1. Ummm I’ve only made a couple things so far. Like I have a whole bunch of railroad spikes so I’ve made a bottle opener I tried like one knife. I’ve tried using rebar for tongs but haven’t really gotten the time to go it and do it. Right now I’m just using what I’ve got for simple projects like more bottle openers. I’m trying to make a hammer a hatchet instead stuff like that but I’d like to eventually get into knife/ax making. I’ll have to find a photo of the two things I’ve actually completed.
  2. Thank you all for the advice! I don’t think I know anyone who works on/with those things, iron dwarf but I can ask around. Twisted, I’ve been meaning to just go to some random metal yards we have around her and ask about pieces that they can’t really sell as they are mostly bulk suppliers. Irondragon, finding a safe place to pull over in the Odessa area is pretty close to impossible. We’re not well known for our driving skills haha but I will keep an eye out anywhere else we go.
  3. Oh boy! I have 6 cats and a husky but these are the guys that are normally out with me while I fumble at the forge. Tigger (brown) Mein (tux) Artemis (husky)
  4. Hopefully! One of the biggest issues is that I have no idea where to get metal from. I can get railroad spikes and scrap metal from work but I have no idea what grade or type it is.
  5. I do extremely minor metal working in my limited free time. Mostly looking for people who do the same in or around Odessa Texas for questions and advice!
  6. thanks frosty! I’ve done a few small projects like railroad spike bottle openers but I don’t think I’ve done enough of them to fully feel like I can control the metal. Maybe I’ll try Alec steels “do 100 of these first” video if I get an adequate stock piece of metal. I’ll definitely update location too.
  7. Jhcc thanks for the link! I’ll look through it first. I tried searching for some info but I got a little lost thomas I’ve just acquired a cross peen and plan on slightly rounding the flat face. I’ve also gotta clean up the peen since I found it in a scrap pile at work (the handle was broken and it was easier for the company to buy a new hammer for the employee) Steve. Thanks! I was unaware there were different sections for different projects. I’ll keep that in mind and also try to figure out how to make posts in specific groups. I aplologise for any inconvenience I may have caused. I know forums get flooded easily and appreciate and respect organization. As I stated previously I just kinda got lost.
  8. I have an old claw hammer that I’d like to try and make into a bearded hatchet. I’m a bit confused, however, on how to control the direction the metal spreads to. I’d like for it to mostly draw out to what will be the bottom of the hatchet but how can I control that? I’m fairly new to forging so I’m sorry if this is a simple matter.
