i forged a square horn for it works great and that anvil is the quietest i have ever beaten on but as i asked what kind is it some think its a moushole from the 1850s or newer

took a piece of what i thought was old wrought today 2 x 1/4 flat to make some andirons any ways i split it after one heat about four inches down the center as i was finishing the cut the piece started to crack horizontally small cracks about half inch wide never seen the likes of it perfectly straight cracks even where it wasnt heated
any thoughts boys? -
i wouldnt use it at all i have the same hammer and the die block has become loose but i repalced the bolts and used loctite it stayed tight for four years though

couple of good videos on u tube of chain welding you could look at furthermore i think sometimes trial and error is ok to a point. read up on the procedure and start with a size of metal that you are comfortable with. Never give up something you enjoy!

depends on the kind of smithing you do as to who you think is great or gives you inspiration my favorites are Oleg Shyshkin, Albert Paley, Samuel Yellin. My inspiration comes from these men as well as from architects of the past such as Victor Horta and William Morris

a few of us are planning to start a new guild for the eastern ontario blacksmiths as it seems that oaba is based mostly in the west. nothing against oaba however some of us would like to get together on a more regular basis down here( east that is. )

seems complicated to me whats wrong with fire brick? also martin did you give up on the whisper mama? i believe its cheaper and easier to buy a propane forge on ebay i got a three burner with guages foor around three hundred delivered had it four years and it still works good still waiting for your call b ut maybe ill call you today

i suggest a business degree and an ability to change and grow dont get stuck on a certain item or style unless it gets you paid. a background in sales and business will help you understand that if your not making money you have to quit before you go bankrupt. dont let a passion for something get you in trouble we make a living smithing but its mostly architectural small ticket items9weekend shows) are good for cash flow and some personal marketing possibilities. keep it small and learn how to market yourself .

do you like the anyang hammer better than the big blu if so why. reason being i am thinking of getting a hammer and see you have an anyang in your shop. also i dont want a really big one as i dony want to dig a huge foundation in my shop. ps the forge looks good

pk i have my forge about chest height as i dont care to bend over and look into it i also have a table top in front of the forge about 2 feet square so i can rest materials on it. my little propane forge is about 18" long and 7" square.

the plates with the holes are where they join the rails the hc spikes go on curves in the railway as they are higher carbon than the others

i have a william foster anvil #159 1853 is date with queens crown stamped in it the question i have is there is also j p stamped under the date anyone know if this is a persons stamp or something else?
