I have a chance to get a used JET JMD-15 mill/drill for $450. Anyone had experience with this one? I have never used mill and have no idea what to check for on a used one. Any input would be grately appreciated.

Great first knife.....
Two suggestions:
Blend the top of the guard to the handle.
Shorten the bottom of the guard some.
Just my personal preference.
Still a great first blade. -
It felt good to be making knives again. I really miss forging and may not ever be able to do it again, unless I can learn left hand.( yeah sure) I am just trying to streatch the muscles and ligaments at this time. By Feb I can start some light weight training. Only time will tell.
In the mean time, I'll just keep at it with stock removal.
Thanks for the kind words and well wishes. -
I just delivered these blades today to my bone Doc.
He is into Japanese cuisine and so is his Mom and sister. These are just a token of my appreciation for the repair of my shoulder. He went above and beyond the norm to get me fixed up.
My shoulder is not up to hammering yet, so these are stock removal.

I have been using my Coote for almost 4 years and it has has done everything I have needed. A 3 step pully is the variable speed.

Robert, looks like a useful blade. Let us know how the 8660 works out.

Man, that blade is like, far out! Wow, just looking at the handle colors made me flash back to the 60's. :D
-
Thanks. I used 1095 on these. I like"banging to shape" most of the time.

Thanks for the kind words. The customer has seen the pic and really likes it.

Congratulations. I haven't even tried welding. Still working on the forging part.:D

Nice first knife. Looks like an early trade knife or a scalper.
-
Looks like it will get the job done. Was it forged by a hand hammer or a power hammer?

Thats a sweet package, Robert. Back in the 60's, one of those would have got me in trouble. Cut and burn!

Thanks Tim. Feel free to use any design that I post. Just pass em' on.:D

I agree with Rich, strap'er down to something heavy and bang away.
BTW is that blood on the table?:D -

Your excitement is well deserved. Great job. Please show us the finished product.

Finally had time to try out my new anvil and a new hammer yesterday. Made two blacksmith kinves with leather wrapped handles.
The new hammer started life as a 3# drill hammer. Reground to a square face and a cutler's face. I really like the way it moves metal.

Great work!

Bed rails fall in the mystery metal catagory. Heat a piece to non magnetic and quench in water or light oil. Put it in a vise and whack it . If it breaks it has at least 60 points of carbon. But it's still a mystery.
Belt grinder modifications?

Farmer Phyl, the plans by Tracy Mickley are great. I have just received my mine and am assembling parts. A number of knife makers have built a grinder from his plans and have nothing but praise. He is a well known knife maker and a great guy to deal with. Go to his main website and check it out.
