  1. If it passes the rest of the testing I will just use it as is. Portable hole sounds like the right course of action.
  2. I saw the other filers anvil. I just missed out on a coal forge, buffalo blower, and an anvil last weekend. I have gathered materials to build my own coal forge and even set it up and tested it... now my wife says... "Not in the garage" so I need to build a shed outside. Slow going but it's going.
  3. Great for learning on then, and that's right where I am at.
  4. That's right, you have an anvil registry going... will do. I will look at that, thank you.
  5. I have access to a machine shop behind my work, it is very possible I could have a plate welded to the top to include the hardy and pritchel holes added back to the plate.
  6. This anvil is for sale and I will be traveling to purchase it this Saturday if the feedback here is decent. I have read the anvil testing guidelines and understand them. Here are some pics just in case there is something that stands out immediately to people with more knowledge than I currently do.
  7. I am not contracted, I was merely asked to take a look for someone that is considering making an offer. This is a personal collection (a hoard might be very appropriate terminology), not in a museum... and I have no idea at this time what condition it is in at this time. From what I understand the seller is considering taking it all to a metal recycler and being paid by the pound for it. My role would merely be helping do research to figure out what may or may not be worth saving from the recycler.... I have a previous hobby of trying to save older Willys vehicles and full size Jeep vehicles (M-series, Wagoneers, Cherokees, J-series) I hate seeing good metal go to the recycler... just about as much as I hate dealing with 3" thick bondo over cancerous rust.
  8. I will be needing assistance from a moderator or a moderator endorsed person. I have the opportunity to view and photograph a collection of 20+ anvils, various forges, possible other forging equipment. What I need to do is... 1) properly identify each item 2) estimate what should be payed for each item 3) estimate what each item should sell for I am extremely new to this entire craft and have very little knowledge of my own. Frankly I am surprised this opportunity came my way, still trying to figure that out. This could be a very exciting way to educate myself (with the forums assistance) and perhaps find some excellent gear at a fair price. Thank you, John
  9. Once again I am finding myself thrilled to find all the knowledge on this site.
  10. Thanks for the continued feedback, as a few days have passed... it seems my employer has more than a passing interest in forging as well.
  11. We have tried several planer blade sharpeners... the real trouble is we aren't using them on a planer, there isn't really a specific use blade for this... but that is the only type of blade available from the manufacture. We have 40 or so planer blades that don't last much more than ten minutes. The surface grinder we already own isn't adequate to remove the back bevel and resharpen them in a timely manner. The surface grinder is perhaps under powered for our needs and we need to look into upgrading there instead. We have the option of sending them into a professional sharpening service but his prices to sharpen them rival purchasing new blades. Which brings in the slow shipping times getting the blades from Florida.... The Bader option was, in part, my employers attempt at sponsoring my hobby... but if it doesn't make sense it doesn't make sense. @Kozzy That is a very good point as well, when I discussed pricing with them over the phone I believe that price was with all the extras and they could bring down the price if we didn't want them. Thank you for the input guys, Sargos
  12. Thank you for the info ThomasPowers.
  13. I will have the chance to have one of the benchtop models purchased for me by my employer. (I will be merely sharpening mild steel blades for a ride on floor removal machine with it for my employer) I will have full use of this machine while I am not at work.... my biggest question is ... is there a better machine in the $2,500 range I should be aware of? Will this be suitable for finish work for a smallish home forge? Looking for some feedback from people that have had good or bad experiences with this product. Thanks for your time. Sargos
  14. True, however I know myself pretty decently... I love learning the true historical factoids. Too much of it gets lost to time.
  15. Thank you for that invaluable information, THAT is one of type of things I am here to learn and not argue about.
  16. So far in life I have had the most succes learning and becoming very familiar with the basics of anything I am attempting to learn. Then, and only then, do I move on to more complicated or technical aspects. This is how I work, not saying there is anything wrong with any other way, but this works for me. If you were somehow offended then that's just too xxxx bad. It wasn't intentional.
  17. I am wanting to take a utilitarian approach to it, my mentor suggests making a set of tongs as a first project. I have a lot of work to do in just researching what works well for others... and surely there will be some common themes. I want to keep it close to traditional techniques till I get a good feel for that, then move into powerhammers and other powered equipment. I am already in contact with the local guild, and have sat in on one forging session. There aren't many things that get me excited like this.... unless it's an older Jeep or it's belt fed.
  18. OK location has been added, hoping for a nice slow week at work to give me time to start reading the forum's more. I have already found a local mentor that does work far beyond what I currently dream about doing. Stand up guy, and he has built his own canon that appears historically accurate. I can't even seem to light the coals for a BBQ without thinking of forging lately. Same way I feel about older full size Keeps I guess. (1963 Wagoneers, 1967-69 M series, all the Jeepsters, 1974 - 1983 Cherokee. See what I mean?
  19. Glad that I found this forum, plan on researching before paying for gear I don't need.... and learning from a huge well of knowledge. Thanks to the admin of this page and to the active members. Sincerely, John
