  1. I find the better tools help to produce a better result and last a lot longer. I save my money for Stihl chainsaws, Mac hand tools (all purchased as carefully picked used tools) etc. I have been forced to use cheaper stuff in the past due to economics, but much prefer the good stuff when I can swing it. The exception for me is when the tool defies age. My large post vise was cheap due to age and rust but is a thing of beauty and a pleasure to use...same with my Peter Wright anvil. My hammers for the most part are older than me and were purchased at auctions and garage sales. I wouldn't trade them. I hate a cheap gun and my favorite is an old M1a. I despise a tool that fails when doing the job it was made for...so do my knuckles.

  2. Pueblo steel mills going through rough times, I live just north of there. They just laid off a bunch of folks (again) and the latest international trade deal will probably be the final nail for them. Sad to see it all go overseas. Some parts of Pueblo pretty rough (gangs) so be careful if you start looking around. I always have a great time wandering around old manufacturing areas, lots of heavy steel in them. Sometime it's hard to tell what some of the machines did for so many years....but it is fun to look.

  3. Very cool vise. Pattern Maker vices have movable jaws like that to allow clamping of tapers and shapes. Might have something to do with the original intent. Can't beat some of those old tools.....they don't make 'em like that anymore.

  4. Shop fire is a big fear of mine...former wildland firefighter so admittedly a little paranoid. I leave the lights on in the shop after I finish grinding, forging or cutting to force me to go back and check before finishing for the night. I use slate panels (old school blackboards) to shield the sparks in my grinding area.  I like the idea of hot and cold areas, I need to do better there.
