  1. The Athens Forge, a member of the Alabama Forge Council will meet Sat. Jan.23 at 9am. We will meet in the new building located at 722 Commercial Dr. Athens AL. This is 2 buildings west of previous shop. You can park at old shop, or anywhere within the fence line of new shop. NOT in front of the Lion's Gym.

    The demonstrator for the day is our new Forge Master, Calvin Garland.  He will be forging a belt ax.

    IF YOU ARE SICK (FEVER, COUGH, CHILLS, SORE THROAT) PLEASE, DO NOT ATTEND. 

    IF YOU FEEL UNEASY ATTENDING A GROUP MEETING PLEASE, DO NOT ATTEND.

  2. Hi T. Savage I, and I'm sure many others, would also like to see pictures of your set up.

    I teach some basic blacksmith classes for a  site that is connected with a local school district. It would help me to have suggestions on how we might make the classes more ADA compliant. The question has not come up yet, but needs to be considered.

  3. The Athens Forge, a member of the Alabama Forge Council will hold their next meeting on Sat. Aug.22, 2020, starting at 9AM. 

    We will meet in the new building located at 722 Commercial Dr. Athens AL. This is 2 buildings west of previous shop. You can park at old shop, or anywhere within the fence line of new shop. NOT in front of the Lion's Gym.

    Our demonstrator will be Steve Williamson from Columbia, TN.  Steve will be forging a shovel.

    If you want to bring something for the Tannehill Iron in the Hat or auction, that would be great.

    There is a pile of free coal behind the old shop available to Athens Forge members.  Bring your own bucket.

    This meeting will be an Open Forge meeting. You must be a member of the AFC to work. Bring your own hand tools and material.

  5. The Athens Forge, member of the Alabama Forge Council, will hold their next meeting Sat. Jan. 25, 2020 starting at 9AM. Al Stephens will be demonstrating forging flat jaw tongs, and scrolling pliers. There will be open forge time for AFC members following the demo.  Ideas and plans for the rest of the year can be discussed.

  6. The Athens Forge, member of the Alabama Forge Council, will meet Sat. Dec.28, 2019 at 9AM. This will be an  "Open Forge" meeting for AFC members to come and work on personnel projects. Space and forges are on a first come, first serve basis. Bring your own material, and any special tools you may need.

  7. The Athens Forge, a member of the Alabama Forge Council, will meet Sat. Nov. 23, 2019, at 9AM. Our demonstrator for the day will be Mike Linn.

    Mike has been blacksmithing since 1993 and has been active with the Alabama Forge Council ever since. His primary focus is colonial and medieval/gothic style ironwork and anything else that catches his eye and can push his skill set further. Mikes blacksmith philosophy is one of continuous education, learning, and expanding horizons.

    There will be a Iron In The Hat raffle,  including the candle stand made at the last meeting, and other blacksmith made items at this meeting. Tailgating is always welcomed.

  9. The Athens Forge, a member of the Alabama Forge Council, will meet Sat. Aug. 24th at 9AM. Travis Fleming and Calvin Garland will doing a trial run of the Tannehill demo, for the AFC conference coming up. So if you can't make the conference, be sure not to miss the demo.

  10. The Athens Forge, a member of the Alabama Forge Council, will meet sat. July 27th, at 9AM. This will be an Open Forge meeting with no formal demonstrations. So bring your tools and material, questions, answers, or just a good story and enjoy the day. Note to all Athens Forge members, we are committed to providing some things for the AFC tool box to be auctioned off at the fall Conference. This would be a good day to work on them.

  11. The Athens Forge, a member of the Alabama Forge Council, will meet Sat. June 22, at 9AM. Our demonstrator for the day will be Steve Alford of Athens AL. Steve is the editor of the AFC "Bituminous Bits" and a talented smith that can do about anything from household hardware to knives, and wood working tools. He will be doing a "Brownie Spatula".

  12. Hi Chuck, I've worked on dirt, gravel, bare concrete, and concrete with pads on it. I believe that for comfort the hands down winner is dirt. Equipment can be placed on pads if necessary.

    If you have a place to change shoes EVERYTIME you enter the house, it will keep the house cleaner. Good luck. Al 

  13. Jason, contact your insurance agent. They may well suggest way more than you need, but you will at least have some facts, how much you have to spend, to consider. Having said that I have been invited into others shops for 30+ years without having to sign any type of release form, and always try to return the favor and pass on the knowledge  when I have the chance.   14. The Athens Forge, a member of the Alabama Forge council will meet Sat. May ,25 at 9AM. Our demonstrator for the the day will be John Wayne Taylor from Wetumpka, AL.

    John is an accomplished smith/machinist with a lot of good ideas. If you can't attend the meeting the demo will be live streamed on Youtube at AFC Athens Forge.

  15. The Athens Forge, a member of the Alabama Forge Council, will have it's next meeting Sat. April 27, starting at 9AM. This will be an open forge day for AFC members, so bring your project, questions, ideas. For new members and beginners there are tools and material on hand, and plenty of  advice.

  16. The Athens Forge, a member of the Alabama Forge Council, will have it's next meeting Sat. March 23, starting at 9AM. Our demonstrators will be Edd and Donnya Harbin. This brother and sister combo will be producing rings from various coins, using both mechanical presses and basic hand tooling. 

    There will be tailgate sales, and if time, Open Forge time for AFC members.
