  1. Right on. That's my biggest thing really. Can i repair them to a fully functional piece and then all be able to get 40 bucks or so out of it at even a minimal profit. Obviously the one given to me for free is Jay going to be parts and time so that's all on me. The others there are 4 of them and the guy said he would take 50 for them but they all have worn out screw boxes. I'll explain my point and try to get him down a bit. If it works out to be cheap enough I'll grab them for parts and such. I was hoping there was a way to repair them for 15 maybe 20 bucks to a good working condition. Steve
  2. Ok so let me try to narrow my question since I've searched for way to long with nothing fruitful at all. Would it be possible to weld a nut to the striped out screw box? Maybe? I'm really not finding anything but glimpses at suggestions but no real information on how one might go about it. Steve
  3. Yeah i tried the search function and got little to nothing. Absolutely nothing worth any description as to how is done. If you could point me in the direction of a proper search I'll gladly read until the cows come home. Steve
  4. Had a really nice Columbian given to me yesterday and have a chance to buy a couple others on the really cheap. Problem i have is they all have a worn out screw box, I've inspected all of them and the screw itself is good but little to no threads left in the screw box itself. If it's possible and reasonable to repair this i will be the owner of one perfectly functional (from my first purchase) and 5 broken vises by the end of the day tomorrow for a combined investment of 75 bucks...... money i would like to recoup (and multiply slightly) to put back into my anvil fund. Steve
  5. It's officially mine, in the shop and im running the wire wheel on it now scrubbing off the walmart chrome... lol. The U shapped bracket is there just no mounting plate. thats not going to be a difficult thing to make its the spring that I question. I have a bunch of leaf srpings from some small cars and trailers so i was hoping to be able to use one of those for the repair here. Gotta get the forge finished up first so that I have a way to heat and bend said srpring. I also bought a couple pair of tongs. one pair that im totally lost as to what they are for since I've not seen anything like them before but for 2 bucks I figured I couldnt go wrong and could just reshape the jaws if nothing else. Also found a pair of bolt tongs for a five spot that look like they were never used. Steve
  6. Craigs last is a joke around here. Cheapest I've seen was 150 and it was junk in comparison. An them as high as 350 for a 5". Flea markets and antique shops are like has stations in these parts. One on every corner.
  7. I'll absolutely go grab it then. I was there 5 minutes before they closed and can be there when they open. Lol Steve
  8. Think I'll go grab it on the morning. Anyone know of a good tutorial on how to make that spring? Steve
  9. I found a vise tonight at one of the local antique stores. It's missing a couple pieces. The spring and the table mount is not there but for all intensive purposes it's in good shape and very usable. The jaws are 5" used but not destroyed and the leg isn't broken or bent. The screw looks as though it's brand spanking new. I took a couple pics but can't get them to upload...... scrackets. EDIT, PICS WORK Anyhow, what do you guys think for 30 bucks? Steve
