My grandpa has an old American Scale 200lb anvil. It looks like it has a cast iron body and a Steel plate. However i can run a file acrosse and it digs deep. So a buddy said he can resurface it(which it really really needed) for cheap and while machining it he said it cut more like Ductile when he was expecting a harder steel. All that to ask if anyone know if American Scale co KCMO used steel plates or ductile iron on top of their anvils. I know how to harden steel but ductile will take some research.
