  2. Shanew8869, Welcome to IFI. You have come to the right place to learn that is for sure. Collecting up steel and other raw materials is every blacksmiths mission. There are many places to get it. You could start by looking for old car parts. Leaf springs and torsion arms are good steel to make blades and such out of. You could also look in the phone book for any recycling centers most places like that have a steel pile that sometimes people can go pick through. Also check the local fabrication shops sometimes they are willing to part with some good size pieces out of there scrap bins. Of course, you can always check pawn shops for old files and such that you could put to the fire and bang out something cool. If that doesn't produce any goodies you can always buy from a steel supplier there are hundreds of them online shipping is a bugger though. Good luck with the hunt let us know what you find.
  3. Stixman55, I would be happy to share the step-by-step process. After all isn't that why we are all here. I have more pictures in my member gallery feel free to take a look. I'll put together some instruction for you but it will take me a few days to do. I plan on posting it to the blueprints section as well.
  4. Hi everyone, I have never tried forging a hammer before so please forgive me but what is the difficulty in forging a hammer? I am not familiar with the process so I might be missing something. Also, what kinds of steel are used? Are they heat treated or hardened in any way?
  5. Woodeye, Go to TECO Pneumatic at TECO Pneumatic - pneumatic components they have everything you need from cylinders to valves and fittings. Good Luck!
  6. Ericthered, Welcome back to the world of smash make flat. I just ordered some coal from Penn Keystone Coal Company, LLC they ship any sized order right to your door. They sell pocahontas #3 blacksmithing coal for about $15 a 50lb bag plus shipping. Welcome to IFI I look forward to seeing some of your work.
  7. Badger, Welcome to IFI. It is nice to meet you. There is a lot to learn about blacksmithing and this site has a wealth of knowledge. I just recently joined this site but I have been blacksmithing since 1996. I look forward to seeing some of your work.
  8. This was my first attempt at a copper rose. I made this about 5 years ago. I am interested in hearing what everyone has to say.
  9. A couple more leaves and some twisted wire for a stem and it's done.
  10. Here is a shot that shows that I dished out each leaf of the rose.
  11. I spent a lot of time cutting the little notches in the edges of the leaves.
  12. I had some old copper sheet laying around the shop and thought I'd try my hand at a rose.
  13. This is my 1st attempt at a copper rose I made it about 5yrs ago.
  14. Thanks for the feedback everyone. I really appreciate it. I will have to check into some of these suppliers. I think Chehalis is the closest to me but I'll have to look. Thanks again.
  15. Thomas, It's nice to meet you as well. How are things in Texas? I used to live over in the Seattle area. I liked it there for the most part but the traffic and cost of living was hard to deal with. I'll try to post some of my work as soon as I get my camera working again. I look forward to seeing some of your stuff as well. Thanks
