That makes it very difficult, but I think it's very insulting to the masters and apprentices of the past and present for someone to simply beat on iron and call themselves a blacksmith.  I can't count the number of youtube videos I've watched where a guy calling himself a blacksmith simply bangs on some hot iron, turning out a horribly disfigured end product.  

 

This is usually so in pottery to. (as a potter i feel free to say so)

Honestly the whole idea of health and safety in europe seems to be that if you do it and get hurt then tough do not go blaming some one else for what you have done

Do a search for italian style anvil on the web.

In Die Kunstschlosserei from 1908 it is said that the steel jaws have to be tempered before use.(Page 98) becase they vere delivered glasshard.

As far as I understand JET imports from Asia and the edges of that anvil looks crushed not chipped...

If I ever need a new anvil it would be a Refflinghaus #58. A lot like Kohlswas C51 serie.

Söderfors it is. I have the same shield stamped plus "soderfors" on my little anvil.

Last I recall carbon dating of steel was still a bit iffy; has the science caught up with it yet? I'll ask over at the Archeological Metallurgy mailing list tomorrow.

I used to have a scythe sharpening anvil years ago that looked like that but it was not set in a pretty little bench like that when I found it in Indiana but a rotted stump.

I always tell that the square hole is late 17c or later so it would be nice to say that the anvil I use at markets and rennfairs could be period. Not that i belive it is, but anyway... :)
