Ok ive got my blade ready for hadening and tempering my blade is an old leafspring from a truck ill be useing oil heated to close to 130f to harding it nor when tempering in a oven ill back it at no highter than 450f for 1 hour and repeat 3 times correct or do i need to do it differnt i had all this info on my pc and after the power comp sent me a $6000 bill for 1 month that im fighting with them over now im staying with friends and useing dial up so its realy hard to search for the info i dont want to ty up there pc no longer than needed so if 1 of you folks could give me a direct link or tell me how the wifes oven tempering is done i would realy thank you
  4. Well i already miged it its a small place hope it works ok i do have goog friend who is realy good at tig welding and he has a large tig welder ive never tried tig welding but i will keep that in mind i never thought of that
  5. i am already pretty good at mig welding self learned but i dont know about what welding does to metals witch brings me to my next question lol ive made 1 cut to many in my blade not pay attention when i set my jig up so would it be ok to mig weld up the cut normalize and go on ?? its only about 1/4 of a inch and isnt in the blade its in the spine my blade is 1/4 thick btw what im doing is making a parceul hollow handle about 2 inch's of it anyway
  6. What about a truck axle im not sure what type steel it is but could i weld it to spring aswell ?? i also have access to a tig welder
  7. I just checked out your site you sure do make some nice looking knives i hope i can make blades as nice as those one day
  8. Would it be ok to mig weld handles madw outa spring steel to a blade made outa spring steel before its heat treated and if it is after thay are welded would i nead to aneal again or normalize before i started heat treating ?
  9. fire clay mixed with ashe's and 2 inch thick fire brick its seems everytime i get a good smell of burning wood plus a little of that wet burning wood smell i feel bad and that is what the cowboy charcoal smelt like but iwas as dry as could be
  10. that is black pipe the tub is the only galv and i had read where it said the galv tub would work aslong as it was insulated good but as soon as i can ima change that to steel
  11. gudgeing by that guide its close inbetween 6 and 7 was about the oragne color i got it to but as i said it was in dim light
  12. ok well from what im reading i think im good i watched it real close in dim light it gor red and when i was trying to anneal i watched it red then a orange color all this was in dim light not night just dim
  13. well not anything real notable maybey a few when i pulled it outa my forge but i just thought that was just from raking out some coal aswell there where no sparks when i hammered and it wasnt just poping of sparks own its own ?
  14. spring steel from a truck was annealing and normalizing
  15. How do know if i burnt my steel i know its a newby question
  16. ok i used my forge with the galvanized tube and when it is at its hotest i can place my hand on it its a little warm but not hot but as soon as i can ima make another with no galvanizing and the normalization seems to be my problem so far from what i had read i thought i needed to anneal first the normalize but i guess that part isnt as important as to what is first till i need to work the steel
  17. in one of my forges yes its a galvanized lined with fire clay and fire brick its the livly design i belive and yes i have heard of metal fume fever but the thing is ive had this problem dating back to the FD
  18. Btw you guys are great i love this forum and im in no hurry just getting my feet wet once i learned i could heat metal to critcal state i just couldnt resist hammering a little i was amazed at how pliable a pice of steel is when heated and i have a boat load of leaf springs for free so thats why i started with spring steel my uncle has a junk yard and he said anytime i want a spring come get it and with all the help files ive read reread and will reread again along with helpfull folks like yall im sure ill get the hang of it in time
  19. Both pices are 15 inches long 1/4 thick and about 2 inches wide also when i put it in the bucket to cool i placed it closed to 1 side then i later added the other pice beside it and it did seem to bend more that time and rich i agree with you i may be bitting of more than i can chew but im a pretty persistant person and i have already made 2 forges witch are working pretty good i belive i didnt think metal could be heated that fast and i am used to stock removal but new to hammer forging thought i would mess around with it while im scrounging for parts to make a anvil it may sound like im trying to take big steps but im realy just trying out stuff not big deal if my first attemp fails i just figured i could make a curved pice off spring close to straight lol funny thing is my first attemp was more straight than my second but im seeing my mistakes also i musta learned a little so no water on spring steel i had no clue of that 2 weeks ago also i was a firefighter for 12 years and everytime we had a structure fire about 2 hours later i would feel a little sick to my stomack kind bloted feeling now ive only fired up my forge 2 times first time was with some bs kingston charcoal dint make feel bad at all second time was with cowboy bran hardwood charcoal same smell as a house fire and after about 2 hours i started feeling a little sick what is this im not depriving myself of 02 or anything its just the smell have any of you ever had this to happen ?
  20. what ive tried is to straighten then anneal so far i havent tried normalizing is that my problem ? i havent tried a jig and spring steel in water ? i thought that water wasnt a good thing for spring steel thought it was oil only i dont have a anvil and no anvil doesnt help at all i been trying to use block but busted 5 so far lol got get something for a anvil
  21. ok i know im new but ive got 2 pices os spring from an old truck 2 times ive tried the annealing process but after i leave em in a 15 gallon bucket of vermiculite overnight they curve and warp so what am i doing wrong or am i ive got em as straight as i could both times but when i go get em the next day they do the curving suff again im heating to nomagnet state and a little above in dim light they are almost orange they arent curving as much as they where but this last time they didnt miss it by much and what is the best way to get em straight
  22. Well i am gonna do some shaping but ive never done it so ima take it slow i would like to try and make a hachet or axe and a bowie style knife but i have done stock removal on just plane old wall angers before ive never used good metal before always just some old soft stuff for looks i never realy thought i could make a good working knife but with yalls help i think i can alog with alot of trial and error also 1 more thing after i anneal the complete pice of steele i leave the tang in a soft state right no harding at all ??
  23. Well all i need is to is get 1 more pipe and connect my fan and ill have my first forge homemade brakedrum forge now ive been reading all i can and i just wanna be sure im correct ive got a few truck leaf springs bent of course so ill anneal first then the next day reheat and straighten the springs then normalize by heating red hot then letting air cool ?? then i may start stock removal correct ?
  24. I had to stop at PREPARATION OF THE SMITH: when it got to the female part i guess im not cut out for the magic sword but on a more serious note as i had said before its just gonna be a wall hanger i figured i could get a good amount of practice with the hot metal with a blade such as the rambo type offsetting the teeth and all
  25. Im ready for the magical sword story lol i need to shorten some MG barrels well atleast the ones that are pointed at me its no good bringing a knife to a gun fight but the magic sword may do the trick
