I used to work in a steel mill. caught my overalls on fire cutting a large ingot with a torch, It happened so quick I didn't even feel it until my clothes were very well ignited , luckily it was in a cooling yard with lots of water puddles which I rolled in. Six months in hospital 3 skin grafts. Still feel it and that was in the early 70's. Real bad memory be careful folks.

Well friends I thought I should give a little update on the results of Ashley's brain tumor surgery. She had to go back in for a second round of surgery.. 5 hours worth and she came out just fine. They have her on a whole parade of drugs and she went from a bright shining light to a fragile candle in about 30 days. BUT your prayers have worked and gotten us this far, they have meant SO MUCH to our family that I wanted to say thankyou unknown blacksmith friends for your SINCERE humanity, prayers and kindness.. Thanks so much.. Fondest regards to all who took the time to write..Chain

after using all kinds of firetools around the coal forge, I found a small pointed concrete trowel is really a great tool for maintaining your fire. Doesn't look quite as good as a pineapple twist fire rake with a dragon head on the end , but it sure is a handy tool.

I bought a couple of canvas carpenter's nail "aprons" ( not sure what you really call them) and I roll my files up in them. Portable, cheap ( about 2 bucks each) and keeps my good files from touching each other.

2) Enjoy lots of music every day especially in the shop
3) Figure out how to actually forge weld together the female joint on a set of dividers without burning them up in the process
4) lLearn to chisel and chase

I bought some "hawk bells" to decorate a tomahawk I had just finished. I decided since it was the holidays to attach the a couple of bells to my favorite hammer right below the head. Jingle bells in the forge as it were. Here is the amazing upshot of this little bit of foolishness, improved hammer control. It gives an added dimension when hammering, the sound of the bells at the top of the swing. I couldn't believe my ears, a whole additonal dimension of control at the top of the swing. Since I am kind of a hammer control junkie, I thought I'd pass it along..Has anyone ever tried anything like this??.. Not sure I'd take the hammer out in public by the way, looks pretty weird.

I bought a big one a few years back. I'm glad I have it. I am wanting to buy one of those salt fork craftsman swage blocks. Looks like it's about the right size to be real handy

For those so inclined say a little get well prayer for my 17 year old daughter Ashley who is back in the hospital for the 3rd time trying to recover from brain tumor surgery

Steve Sells I own a 1/2 Wolf 1/2 Huskey.. A great dog ( unless you are a chicken or a squirrel) so I for one understand your forge naming logic.

Been there twice. You can't beat it. Shops open 24/7 for 2 solid weeks and Everyone works as much as they can. Great equipment, great teachers and hard core students. It's the real deal. enjoy if you get to go.

Philip, glad you have solved the problem. One thing that I think works pretty well when the firegods are in a bad mood, is to toss a couple of pinecones in with the wadded up paper. those things ignite quickly and burn hot..
