  1. Those actually do make good tongs I found some ( 3 pairs)at a junk sale for 3 buks a piece and made them into tongs for holding larger stock. Like hammer billets and such. its fun finding other functions for scrap items

  2. That must be one heck of a sandwich lol. 4 hours later . My forge will sputter sometimes also and I'm not 100percent sure of this but I think when my building door is open the wind blowing causes mine to do weird crap. Am I imagining this? And also frosty how important is it to have a choke plate on a natural aspirated burner . I don't have one. Just figured I'd ask

  3. That's a great looking set up. Especially the mini forge that's an awesome little stainless contraption. BUT,one thing I do see from the pics is that the propane tank forge looks to have a GALVANIZED burner tube and assembly . please correct me if I am wrong . I've made a few gas forges and I always shoot for black iron for those parts. Just looking out for a fellow smith and those parts don't get terribly hot but the burner tube itself may get hot enough to put off zinc fumes

  4. I'm with everybody else on this one I built a small Freon bottle has f. What ge with a single burner and I use it for most everything.  But I built a propane size one too for bigger  stuf. The reil  ez burner seems to be a simple as they get. If you have the money for a company made forge I'd go with nc tool or diamondback. They most expensive  thing I encountered  with the build was the ceramic#8  blanket. And there's a place I found that sells 2'by50'd  rolls for  100 buks. Its a clay pottery place here in asheville. Hope u decide on what works for you but a build is a good learning  experience and gives you the knowledge to know what  makes a forge work.

  5. Yea those discs probly are cast and if you don't have the steel for an anvil post just wait and save . You will REGRET even wasting your time . I built a rusty/ dusty and tryed a hollow tube and gues what it came back off quickly. And more than likely that plates would break once hammered on. Use them for weights to lay on the base once its built. And it looks like if you go any taller your gona go through that sheds roof .lol. just an observation

  6. Well at the moment I am running a 40lb. Tank but I do have a 100# that I can use if it freezes the 40. I've never been real bright when it comes to figuring volume and stuff like that . The forge im working on now with two laters of kaowool should have a chamber that is 6" round and 16" long. So what's anybody's thoughts on these 1" burners besides me reading that there hotter I haven't seen it or heard anybody say there's a benefit yet.

  7. Well I set forward and bought all the fittings for the burner that arizona artist blacksmith page has and its a 1" tube instead of 3/4" so my forge I'm working on now is a 40 pound grill tank whick all together is like 26" long and same roundness as a regular grill bottle . Do you guys think that a tank that size definetly needs two burners. That page on arizona artist says that one of these types of 1" burners has proven to heat better than 2 of the 3/4" burners so I hate to go way overkill and just waste propane. And is a square body forge serve any better than round or does it just give you more forging space.

  8. Looks good I'm sure that tire hammer helped a ton on fullering those cheeks the first rounding hammer I made out of 4140 I thought was not gona move, lol. It takes making one of these hammers to appreciate it like the owner does. Good luck on the next 5 pounder . Forging is like an addictive drug its just makes you wana do it more and more . FORGE ON

  9. Another maybe silly question but I built this small freon bottle forge to get started . But I am thinking of building a bigger gas forge . And here's the question if I put 2 burners in this next one and make it to where I can use only one burner if needed . Will the heat of the forge burn up the burner that's turned off . Or will it melt the burner tube or cone. Just a thought do you need to put kaowool in the one that's off when forging or will it be ok.

  10. Those look pretty slick and you could always weld a piece of mild steel to the striking end and maybe soften the blow but I'm sure you would have to preheat s7 before welding. I'm working on a 2 by 72 grinder at the moment to make grinding easier for myself also

  11. Thanks sjs I will read up and I put it all together about two nights ago and did my kiln wash and fired it up for about thirty minutes and believe me I see what you mean it heated steel very well for a small single burner forge. It was glowing orange for sure but. The burner did sputter at low preasure is this normal . As soon as I would turn the regulator up it would smooth out

  12. Ok well that's what I thought also I made a little freon can gas forge. But for some reason I was thinking if the burner was 6 inches away from the work it might not heat it well. I keep trying to post pics but when I try to click FullVersion of ifi on my phone it won't let me and it used to do it. I am not a newbie to forging just gas forges lol. I've always been a coal guy . But if I could just fire up a propane forge I think I would get to forge a lot more often

  13. That's funny you mentioned that because its a peter wright I found at scrap yard for 20 buks even. And I origionally planned on using it but I wanted the weight of that 6by6 solid steel post . And I think I might make dies that will slide in but I gotta do some forging before I work on this thing anymore I've neglected the forge for weeks months to work on this in spare time

  14. Hopefully this weekend il try to do some forging as you can see in the pics I need to take about 3 hours and clean out my building I've got to clean a spot where it can stay permanently . I tryed sliding this machine with me and my wife and we couldn't budge it lol. I'm gona have to get a few buddies together if I make a base for it cauz this thing would blow two people a hernia quick I would say around 700 lbs. As it sits
