Different people feel different about tools. I love the farm fresh look on my tools, but sometimes a coat of paint to keep rust from eating up a perfectly fine blower is called for. Now while painting a shark face on your anvil like a WW2 mustang may be the coolest thing ever it's not for everyone. I've found a 3M rust and paint removal wheel from wal-mart and a hand drill does fast work. Brought my champion blower back from the brink of a rusty death. But a little brush and some elbow grease will leave it looking pretty and brown. Oh wear safety glasses if you use the drill method!

Oh good.....so i'm not the only one who goes crazy when they talk about forging the rings in the movie, but they're clearly being cast......

I've seen those movies too many times to count and I never noticed that till now! I guess I am always to excited to get my nerd on.
And iron dwarf the only thing wrong with a 5 foot smith is his anvil is too short for me to use, but I could strike for him all day at that hight.

I reminded my uncle and he had forgotten about it, he's on task now though.

Well this anvil rocks! All except for the build in metal stand it must have been made for a 5 foot tall blacksmith. I have my uncle getting a tree stump and I can't wait!

Thanks guys I tried the degreaser route and busted my mop bucket lol ended up using a 3M paint and rust removal wheel to remove the bulk of the gunk and brushes, tiny screwdrivers and a paint scraper for the rest of it. It came out great I used it the other day and man does it work well. Got some gasket maker to keep the lube in the gear housing?

Well I put it through the paces the other day and all is well. I only need to add a gasket to the gear housing to get the lube in there. It made a huge difference in the control over the amount of air going into the pot! I felt much more traditional, so glad I got this blower!

I'll have to look and see if I can find anything. Thanks got the heads up.

After really looking at it I can't find a "triangle C" mark on it anywhere? Maybe it's an off brand? Does anyone know how I can find out what it is?

I picked up this blower from a friends antique shop on Thursday for $150. It worked ok but needed some adjustment and lube. I felt it was a little pricy but it came with the original stand so I grabbed it. During the cleanup I determined that the stand must have been buried in at least 6 inches of mud! I took everything down to bare metal and put a base coat of high heat grill paint in it. I started working on it Saturday evening and finished late Sunday night it's been a good weekend! Here are some before pics.


And here is the after, I also painted the fan red but the pic doesn't show it very well.



All I need to do now is make a gasket for the fan housing, put some lent seed oil on the wooden handle and connect it to the forge. So what do you guys think?

The hundred weight read 1 0 7 so 119#. I can live with that for now.

What's the best way to get all the caked on grease off the case? Dawn soap, wire brush, chemicals?

You just saved me so much time with this post. I got one of the same model as yours today and it is crusty but functional. I can't wait to dig into it!

Pick this up for around $100. It has 4" jaws and works great just looking for some info. I'll try to post some more pics in the morning when the sun comes out.

After a 5 hour round trip I found myself pulling this out of the truck. What we are looking at is my new 110-120 pound PW. It's in really good condition with clean edges except for one small spot. Paid $425 for it which is about $3.50 a pound, a little high but not too crazy. I also got a 4" post vice in perfect shape and a Lancaster No. 40. To say the least it's been a big day for my little forge!

Wow I thought I had found something here lol. I has Vulcan confused with something else I though it was a descent anvil. Ok guys thanks for all your help and advice, I've spotted a good looking mouse hole and a small PW so we will see how it goes!

i have been searching hard for any anvil worth having and came up dry on anything in my price range. my local blacksmith group didnt even have a line on one. and i think these will be a huge step up from what i have now  and the old RR track ASO lol. i dont do any real heavy work and i have plans to make a stricking anvil in the future for that kind of stuff. here is what im working with now!

i have a deal in the works on 2 anvils but i want a 2nd opinion on their quality and condition.they are both supposed to have clean edges other then the chip on the vulcan and the marks on the NC. i can get them for less the $300 each, i may keep both or use one as an investment, we will see how it plays out!

 

the first one is a 100# vulcan, it looks like it has a nice thick top plate.

 

the second is a NC star around 100# also, i dont know much about this brand or its function. it has some serial numbers on it but i dont know what they mean.

 

any and all info will help, as its a 6 hour drive to pick them up!

I recently purchased an actual blacksmith hammer, but I will continue to use this one as advised. Thanks for all the advice!

I did the best I could to get the faces down to a clean finish I was just concerned that I might have to harden the surface to make it work. I used it today and it did ok it might be too soft though!

Ok so I fired up my forge for the first time today! It was a blast I straightened out some of my scrap and learned a hard lesson about tending the forge. I killed my flame as I was heating rebar to practice some tapering lol oh well! I don't think I've ever had more fun with my clothes on...I'm hooked!
