  1. i love makin rivets...usually 6mm shaft diameter...but every time i kick off a forging session i'll bash out 4 or 5 of them...helps to get me warmed up and add to the pile of rivets that come in handy when i feel the need to make some tongs or gussets what do you guys do?
  2. i see, from the pics you posted earlier it looked as though you had welded the burner tubes into the holes in the side of the forge body (the modified gas cylinder). do you just cut the weld when you need to replace the tubes? or are they just sitting snugly in the holes rather than being welded?
  3. how heavy is the pin? your average hand and a half sword (long sword) is around 3lb i believe...
  4. nice work i love square profile stuff...do almost everything i can in square stock rather than round... if the stock is too thin you could jump it up and make it thicker...thats what i do when making tongs and similar things that need to be mostly fairly thin but need a bit more metal in places to facilitate whatever i need to do with it...
  5. hmmm...an interesting design challenge...i think i could come up with something...will do some work in 3dsmax tonight and post what i've come up with tomorrow...
  6. i dont quite get what you mean...could you post a pic? would it be better to weld a box onto the side into which i can recess the screw ends of the pipes so that the nozzles can be longer and the threaded sections further from the heat?
  7. yeah i bought one of those torches a while ago...worth its weight in GOLD...for all your pyromaniac needs...
  8. how many cubic feet per minute do your blowers push?
  9. is there a need for a waste gate (or blow off valve) on the section of pipe from the blower to the water gate valve? i would have thought the pressure buildup behind the water gate would be substantial...though this could just be me over engineering things again :)
  10. haha well the big valve and pipes was what gave me the steampunk impression... oh thats good to know...i was imagining something a little less rigid...guess its alot like fibreglass in the handling department? to this end would it be a good idea to weld the screw ends of some pipe on the inside of the forge so the nozzles can be screwed on/off as needed? how do you deal with it? in jymm's forge they appear to be welded in place...
  11. i did like what Jymm did with the manifold and the whole rig looked very industrial and kinda steam-punkie...but to be honest it kinda scared me. i spose if you turn the blower on first and then the gas...and turn the gas off first and then the blower the risk of explosion would be reduced... i am really only familiar with coal forges and although i am excited about getting into gas forging the prospect does frighten me slightly...hence my tendency to look for off-the-shelf components rather than trying to slap something together myself when i am not really aware of the risks to the same level as i am with coal... another thing i've been wondering about is how you attach the kaowool to the inside of the modified gas cylinder? is there a need for the nozzles of the burners (as in jymm's forge) to be replaced? i would imagine the ends would become burned...
  12. does it not help in controlling scale? do you have any pictures of your rig? would love to see those burners in use!

    bronze

what do you mean by form? you can melt it most definitely...in a crucible then pour it into a mold...you can also work it as with iron (even though the temps would be lower for bronze)... do you mean this kinda stuff? or actually making your own bronze by mixing copper and tin? which can also be done...
  14. i would think copper is too soft to do this...could be wrong though...there must be some good reason nobody's tried...and google comes up with zip on copper damascus...
  15. i agree! along that line...what do you guys think of these burners? Hybridburners.com Products $185 for the 1" forge burner nozzle doesnt seem like alot compared to the $2000 i've been quoted for an imported, off-the-shelf gas forge...
  16. is this you? Forge Welding coz what you're saying here rings alot of bells :P
  17. wow...that is some serious kit...for the future i think i would attempt a custom gas forge...but for now i think an off-the-shelf model would be a better starting point...dont wanna go bleve'ing my house...
  18. well i do wanna do alot of welding...in particular pattern welding...is this impossible with gas?
  19. whoa...didnt know charcoal made clinkers...
  20. i know this is a pretty common theme but i had a quick search on this forum and didnt find much in the way of a full(ish) list of pros and cons of both forges. so i was wondering if we could get one going. coal: pros: more olde worlde cons: fuel can be hard to find and vary in quality, odor gas: pros: ? cons: harder to weld in?
  21. thanks for all the advice guys! i think wooldridge is pretty much spot on. this woman is incredibly quiet. has people over now and again but mostly keeps to herself and keeps an immaculate lawn out back (which i am sure fans the flames of her hatred for me because my yard is well and truly a WORK IN PROGRESS). to this end i think gas is really the only way. can anyone give me a pros and cons list of coal vs gas?
  22. well all i can say is "hell hath no fury like me impeded"...bring it
  23. i have considered this...she seems to be very upset with me for no apparent reason...i was thinking of inquiring as to the offense i have inflicted...but everytime i feel calm enuff to do so she goes and does something like this...which quite frankly makes my blood boil...
  24. yeah...gotta keep the neighbors happy...sigh its weird...EVERYONE i know loves what i do...how could you possibly NOT? yes its not the same as plugging into sunday arvo football and knocking back a few brewskis...but ffs...its not hurting anyone...and for some (me primarily) its about fulfilling a dream and flexing some artistic muscle...
  25. the thought had crossed my mind...but this woman is a complete nuisance...she would find something questionable and i'd get yet another fine from my beloved brisbane city council...the fun police are on patrol...and they have spies everywhere... the BCC doesnt call the fire dept...they just send a fine in the mail basically its my word against her's and ANYTHING she finds annoying automatically puts her in the right...guilty until proven innocent...
