  1. how many hours do you think went into this project?

about 12 days for the job,and a day for buying the materials. but i think with more experience it may be a few days shorter... in hours about 100?
  2. just have done with the gate, it is to replace an old broken one. (to take it up the stairs to the 6th floor has been quite a challenge...)unfortunately i got pics of making lost, just a few left.the frame 20*20,else 14*14 mm.to the lower 'hinge' i put a toe bearing,it makes the gate open nice post-3106-068865400 1278529145_thumb.jpgpost-3106-051939300 1278529378_thumb.jpgpost-3106-000791300 1278529579_thumb.jpgpost-3106-025891800 1278529740_thumb.jpg

  3. what is the lowest power by tig?(i mean how many amper minimum) most of those cheap welders wok up to 20 A,which may be annoying,if you want weld thin stuff. though i buyed a chinese tig,it welds on 5 amp ,and it really welds all day, even at 160.only problem the torch is getting too hot to use... though the unit was ~300$,but if i had the money,i'd buy the merkle(3000$). life makes the decision easy...

  4. i have the forge ready yet,it vorks fine(just an hour experience, but i think it'll be ok'). one thing-i dont reach white heat, maybe need to increase the pressure? now it ran ~0.2 bar(dont know in psi...),it might be too low...aniway,thanks much for helping,im on the right way... here a few pics,if anybody want build one,i just can say it's not that diifficoult,as it seems first.and if help is needed,it comes also... 16411.attach

  5. i started a gas forge "projekt"(first time). the t burner seemed the easiest to build, found the most advice about.it seems to vork,in a short time-i hope-i'll be ready with the forge too.i planned 3 inch durablanket insulation around, the inside is about10"

  6. mine is a bottom blast, coke fuel, the largest piece i heated so far,was a hammer~3 kgs,and it was hot quite fast. and the forge to build took a weekend,(with no hurry).i could use with charcoal too, just need to reduce air flow. i dont even think,it is more difficoult to build-just need an angle grinder,a welder, and the metall plates.-and a bit of time...

  7. just an advice: dont quench it in cold oil, i made my chisels, and punches of coil spring, and by quenching in room temp. fluid they cracked. by heating up the oil were everything ok

  8. i know, nobody like chinese stuff,but... i have one,200 amp inverter, cost about 300 $,it just runs on 160 amp all day. using tig, the only one limit is the torch getting hot you cant hold.i dont have a problem with, it is simple, and im not scared to take it for work,as i would do about a german qality welder cost 2500$.for simple vork i guess it fits 100%

  9. i've made my pot,it is working for a year already.i had 12 mm plate(almost 1/2 inch).can you cut it with an oa torch?with the angle grinder it might be a challenge...best way to make the form of paper first, that you can see if everything fits.pics about the pot in member galleries/borz,i didnt find the way to post them, sorry

  10. hello! Could please anybody help me? There is an old railing (guess made in the '20-es). i just wonder how the angle could have been made? Do not see any sign of welding (though it get a "few" times painted in 80 years), but anyway it looks like it is made of 1 piece)

  11. unfortunately i dont know the exact tipe.i have about 100 kg of the stuff, smaller and bigger pieces Has been used for a vise,(i didnt find the expression in the dictionary).-the pieces grab the material from 2 sides.Guess they were of a large machinist wise.Of a smaller piece i made a drift, quenched at non-manetic in oil,it got hard, and didnt break. But i dont have experience, just'playing'

  12. hello!
I made a hammer,it is almost ready,i'd just need an advice about heat treating. As i read, ijust need local heating at the pein.my questions were:
1 i have an o/a cutting torch, but no rosebud. Is it useable for the cause?
2 about tempering-colurs like usual? (i have a quite soft anvil)
3 the middle stay as it is? (no heat treating at all?)
thanks in advance for helping,i just didnt want experimenting with that piece of metal(easier to ask first).
    Thanks!

  13. normally it shouldn't be a problem.i've been using my welder more than less with extension cables, and had no problem about safety.they should not be winded up,and must have correct grounding.I use a thick cable, not to loose power.(i dont have experience over 180 amp., but under it i never had problem).on my mig i put industrial plugger,so i made an extension cable for that setup,it works for 10 years now.(about 15 m-maybe 45 feet - long.

  14. Go Hillybillysmith, go! I'm looking forward to following this thread.

I've found some loose rail along an abandoned track on the other end of the island. The thing is all the rails are full length and heavy as the dickens. I'm thinking of making a ninja run early one Sunday morning with my little OA cutting torch and see if I can hack off a piece. I'm kind of new to the cutting torch and not sure I'll be able to pull it off. The thickest I've cut so far is 1" mild steel. Sometimes I've done just fine while other times I've struggled a good deal with only half penetration and lots of molten metal blow back. Anyone got any pointers?

It might be,your torch is too small for the thickness off the material.I dont know the tipe, the nozzle might be changeable( 1, 2, 3),with increasing acet. pressure.First maybe try warm up the material, driving along the flame the way to cut,and give a little more oxigen by cutting.
  15. Posting photos is not difficult. Posting photos in the forum explains the process.

Highlight and copy the URL under the image in the gallery (see arrow) and paste it into the forum where you want the thumbnail to appear. It is just that easy.

sorry, the only problem, that i dont understand even the half of the explanation, and doing around computer not long ago as well. It's a learning process,do my best anyway.Guess it'll be ok soon.Looking up in the dictionary taking a pretty lot of time. But hope dies at least,i keep on triing:rolleyes:

I have my forge in the yard, just in front of the "shop",due to less of space inside. The anvil is inside, although not the best place, but im not like Conan,to move it(about 100 kg).I hope i could send a picture,i try at least. If you want move the anvil, maybe a small trolley(like for transporting gas tanks) might be usable.
  17. Thanks,i guess i have now all the knowledge, just have to put in praktice somehow.About the material- am i wrong with the old drills(hss)?I have some,18-25 mm(about0.5-1""),but i've red about the heat treating, wich doesnt seem easy.(though i made one, even if not the proper way,but it still vorks). Is it reason experimenting around,or rather leave it.An old file i have as well, for triing
