How well does it work?  It isn't pretty but I really like the design.  If I ever build a new forge I may steal this design from you. 

If by fake you mean a traditionally made japanese katana then yes it is fake for sure.  There are lots of modern made katanas that are decent swords but from your picture this looks to be a decorational/ceremonial mass produced sword. You would need to take it apart and look at each piece individually to get more information about what it actually is.

That is completely incredible.  I need to get back to amsterdam.  My wife and I spent a night there on our honeymoon and walked over several incredible bridges but I wasn't into smithing at the time and didn't truly appreciate these.  One thing that I do remember vividly is a park full of life size cast iron comodo dragons.  There were probably 50 of them and they looked so real that I almost jumped when I realized what they were.

What did you use for the screws? 

and a very nice crimping from the looks of it.  Never seen one that old or one that you could flip over for more sizes to crimp.  

I tried to fix it after I realized it was upside down and there is no option to rotate the image :(.
