8620 is a steel spacificly made for deep case hardening. It is often used for gear blanks. Grant sarver made tongs out of it it's low carbon content and alloy content make very strong tough tongs. If you were to make a anvil or stake out of it you should look into case hardening the face.
Good idea! Thanks!Put one in your lathe and turn a long taper on it. Attach or mill a square peg into it to fit your hardy hole, and you'll have a dandy cone hardy.
Got a smaller piece scheduled to go on a lathe soon :) -
Actually started a ram's head today.. and stopped just before finishing the head (lack of time)... now i know what I'll have to make to keep going!
Thanks!

That's a great idea! I really like those last two pieces with the cubes. Really nice.
-
They are actually 4".. and about 16-18" long... I estimate about 60# per bar. My car was feeling it.
-
Yes. I can thank my brother for that...

In the back of my messy car... they had a 0.030"+ bend in them, which made them useless to our shop.
-
That's a great idea! One of the ends is already pretty flat... with a nice chamfer all around.

Nice score MO!

So I grabbed 3 of the big ones, pretty sure i pulled something i my hand when i pulled them out of the scrap bin, they were in the bottom! They are sitting in the back of my car, which im pretty sure didn't like it too much on the drive back.
Ill grab a picture later for the curious. -
That swage block idea is good. Dont know too many smiths around my area, would have to find new friends i think!
I have a pc of 4" dia by 12" that i have scheduled to go on one of our lathes to turn into a cone mandrel. -
Lonselat, those look like a nice pair of tongs to me!
Francis, thats for sure, took a while but we figured out how to it on the side of the anvil and at what angle to move it the fastest. -
Quick update. I was mistaken, the material is actually 8620. 4" diameter and i got a few pieces 16" long.
I was mistaken with another stock we run often around here.
May get one of em milled flat on two sides to get a flat surface to work with. -
Wasn't thinking of forging it.. my weee rivet forge couldn't even handle that lol
Just curious as I am new to this and was seeing what could be done.
I'm liking the idea of turning them into various "anvils".. they are pretty beefy chunks of steel.

I have access to a few pieces of 3 1/2 diameter 9015 steel about 6" long (some more). What would the use of that size be appart from a massive paperweight? They are going to be recycled unless i grab em.... Would be sad to see such nice steel going....
Ideas , thoughts? -
Ricko13 - I saw the Kijiji post for the rack of tools and thought "I contact them tomorrow." Too late (obviously.) Some great looking and hard to come tools going by the pics.Don ShearsTrenton Ont.
They are in good shape, now i just need to figure out all their different uses... -
I get calls quite a bit from people wanting a rounding hammer like mine, and I refer them to Hofi, Brent Bailey, and Nathan Robertson.
This is true, I have called Brian 2 weeks ago asking for some details on his course and his hammer and when I asked him to make one, he refered me to a few more people excluding himself... I had to convince him I wanted one of his! And being from a machinist background, his terminology isn't off and easily understood to the open minded.
Cheers.

Nice video! Thanks for sharing.
P.S.: I liked the slow-mo forge-welding bit ;) -
Just remember steel can be replaced / repaired, a body part, life, etc can't.
Glad you're okay. Things will turn for the better, like you say :) -
Went on a small road trip this weekend and dragged home a few tongs....
and a few weekends ago... a few more hammers / sets / fullers / etc....
all of it.. under 400$.
...a happy newbie here. -

A CNC doing 400+ inches a minute is music to my ears though....
An anvil as that same effect come to think of it. Where's my tuning fork..... -
Nice looking hammer! Can't wait to get mine...

Got a copy of this book as a gift from an older blacksmith from which i bought tools. Have to say it was a very nice gift, haven't had a chance to go through all of it.... But i'm liking the influences found within.
